Kurzbeschreibung

Europe, in the year of the Lord 772

The extraordinary novel, Pride and Honour, is a completely revised and rewritten version of the surprise initial success of the novel Honour and Glory by Nathaniel Burns. The author took many of his readers‘ tips, reviews and advice to heart to make his fascinating tale about Charlemagne and the Saxon King Widukind an even better read. Take this suspenseful, captivating and exciting journey back into Europe’s Dark Ages to meet the pivotal figure of Charlemagne and one of his greatest adversaries.

Like a bloody storm, Charlemagne’s armies ravage early medieval Europe, leaving devastation and misery in their wake. They have subdued the kingdom of the Langobards, defeated the duchy of Bavaria; they threaten the Moors in the west and, in the south, the pope in Rome.

Yet Charlemagne has even more ambitious plans: he covets the Saxon territories in the north. The Saxons put up an unexpectedly fierce resistance. When Charlemagne’s troops destroy the Irminsul shrine, the Saxon holy of holies, there ensues a struggle to the death. Led by the legendary Duke Widukind, for decades the Saxons fight savagely for their beliefs and their independence. And they will have their revenge...

Pride and Honour will transport the reader right into the heart of this legend-shrouded part of the Early Middle Ages. With his story, Nathaniel Burns has woven a a rich, dark tapestry of one of the pivotal periods in medieval European history. His historically accurate descriptions rich in authentic detail bring this remote, strife-ridden world to life again before your very eyes.

Go ahead, stoke the fire in the hearth, draw your armchair closer and dive into this wonderful historical novel full of royal intrigue, warriors, and battles of a bygone Europe…

HASH(0xa0796090) von 5 Sternen A Must Read!!! 5. November 2013
Von Gopa Chakrabarti - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Nathaniel Burns' Pride And Honor, The Battle for Saxony, is an important piece in the puzzle of 8th century history. Once it was simply called the Dark Ages. Now we better know this thousand year gap between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance as the Viking Age. This novel follows the rule of the Frankish king Charles, better known as Charlemagne 742-814. The novel focuses on his efforts to conquer his northern neighbor Saxony, defend the faith of the Roman church, expand his empire, and convert the Saxons to Christianity. Heavy cavalry was the method closer to the bone than the supplications of black-robed priests.
We participate in repeated pitched battles, raids, burnings, and meandering politics as Charles duels with populist Duke Widukind of the Saxons. This novel telling is more accurate history than fictional imaging. Although somewhat dry and lacking the Blood-letting detail of Bernard Cornwell, Lincoln's novel is well-written, well researched and a thorough account of events that shaped the birth of Europe.

Here we find the early rise of the Norse raiders better known as Vikings. Here we see how disparate tribes unite to battle the most powerful king to a standstill and then find a strategy to merge into a single people. If you descend from a German, French or Scandinavian Prideline, this book honors your ancestors and gives memory to your lineage.
Cultures collide; here's the why behind the old ways being set aside. New ideas and ways of governance bend and shape our collective future, making way for the unity of new nations. Thor and the Norse gods are honored, debated and overturned in the steady march of Christianity that made salvation a personal experience for noble, freedmen or surfs.

This was a time in which a man's pride and honor were all important. Warning, a thorough reading may awaken the Saxon in you. Remember, it is important to honor our history so that we are not compelled to repeat it. Five stars.

This book is about Pride and Honour of men and the women behind them. The queen is stealth, solid, resilient and noble. She hints on the boasting of men, speaking of their pride and how it channels their decisions. Life is fleeting. See how quickly we can learn. Not just a field battle, but also a battle of wits. Great read.

A great account of Charlemagne's quest to conquer Saxony. Few details of his life are known, but the author does a credible job of trying to fill in the blanks.

HASH(0xa063bdd4) von 5 Sternen Good read, interesting characters, different point of view 5. Dezember 2013

Well-written story of an era in history that we don't often see written about, especially from the side of the Saxon people, history usually being written from the point of view of the winners. Gives a good view of what war was really like in that time and the devastating effects on the lives of everybody in it's path---and in the end, the cost and often the futility of resorting to force and vengeance. The book certainly does not romanticize those we may now look back on as heroes.

The author does a good job of giving a fully dimensional character to many of the people appearing in the book. I wished for that with more of the characters, but as the book covers a fairly long period of time, perhaps he felt the need to keep some parts brief.

I would recommend this book to anybody interested in European history, especially that which is rarely told.

HASH(0xa062c534) von 5 Sternen Difficult reading 2. Dezember 2013

This was not my kind of book. There were wars and rumors of wars and too many difficult names and places to remember who was fighting who. I found it difficult to follow and finally gave up.
