It's not often a crime novel offers such a smorgasbord of oddball elements, including autopsy advice, methods of combating tree blight, the use of spiders in sadomasochist torture and couples covering the sexual and psychological waterfronts. There's even a little nasty fun at the expense of television psychoanalysts. With geographic locations switching slightly faster than the speed of sound, it's to Reading's credit that she smoothes out the ultra rumpled excesses of Cornwell's mind-boggling plot and takes full advantage of the yarn's narrator-friendly present tense. Having given voice to several earlier books in the series, she's got the main characters down cold. Her Dr. Kay Scarpetta is all snarky professional reserve and personal insecurity. Self-loathing lesbian niece Lucy, sounds properly troublesome and troubled, with an added catch in the throat due to a secret she's keeping. Pete Marino, the bullet-headed, gym rat security chief of the Lucy-originated National Forensic Academy, sounds so gruff and aggressive, he should be kept on a chain leash. And Scarpetta's inamorato, Benton Wesley, whose study of mass murderers' brain patterns gives the novel its title, is, as his name suggests, the very model of a dry, annoyingly passive-aggressive personality. The joke here-intended or not-is that the novel's protagonists are almost as mentally or emotionally disturbed as its homicidal villains. Cornwell seems to have grown weary of the lot of them. But there's still a flicker of life left and Reading has the skill to make the most of it.

I was very eager to get my hands on “Predator” after “Trace” had finally been a great read again. But boy, was this one disappointing! Being a die-hard fan of the Kay-Scarpetta-series it is very hard for me to admit that this one is Cornwell’s worst so far :-(. Even regarding “Predator” with very much favor still makes it substandard. I would have given 2,5 stars, but since that is impossible I had to round up. 1,5 stars for the story line and 1 star for my formerly favorite protagonists: The plot is very disjointed, there are umpteenth of jump cuts and therefore the story line is very hard to follow. The protagonists in this series used to be real, now they are one-dimensional. Everybody is having problems with everybody. And that’s exactly the point: The tensions and problems between Lucy, Marino, Scarpetta and Benton eclipse whatever may have been meant as the thrilling part. Forensics, Scarpetta’s strong field, is negligible in this one Result: Cornwell is definitely off my HC-list. If you are a dyed-in-the-wool fan just like me go ahead and read it, but spare yourself the expense for a HC. If you are a newbee to this series: Please don’t bother with this one! I have always enjoyed Cornwell's novel featuring Kay Scarpetta. I could hardly wait for the next sequel, and then found myself reading the book without putting it down. But the amzaing rise of Scarpetta's lover Benton from the dead the plots have somehow started going downhill. And this is extremely true for this new book 'Predator'. The plot is extremely confusing. There are at least four strings being told in parallel, and it took me about 350 out of the 466 pages to understand what the story war about. Then, the story suddenly rushes on to a somehow bizarre end. I doubt that I will buy another book of this series.

Viele Mosaiksteinchen werden ausgelegt: Bentons Predator-Studie, Scarpettas und Marinos Animositäten, ein betrügerischer Stipendiat, Lucys physischer wie psychischer Niedergang, der Mord an einer - wie immer - grauenhaft zugerichteten - Frau, eine verschwundene Familie, religiöser Wahn, eine egomane Psychologin mit dem sprechenden Namen Dr. Self, und eine mysteriöse Erkrankung von Zitrusbäumen. All das verfolgt man mit gespannter Aufmerksamkeit und dem Wissen, dass, wenn man schlampig liest, die Auflösung nicht mehr versteht. Doch es hat nichts genutzt. Während man sich vor Spannung die Fingernägel abbeisst und auf die Zusammenführung der Handlungsstränge wartet, gerät der Showdown des Ganzen zu einer Enttäuschung. Viele der komplexen Themen werden mit der lapidaren Erklärung des physischen und psychischen Missbrauchs abgehandelt. Für jemanden wie Cornwell, die für ihre Akribie bekannt und geschätzt wird, ist das nicht ausreichend.Mich hat in dem spannenden, wenn auch steckenweise abstrusen Handlungsverlauf, die Story zwar gefesselt, aber zum Schluss enttäuscht zurückgelassen. Und eine Frage am Schluss: Was ist das für eine merkwürde Amazon-Rezension, die mit "Predator" überhaupt nichts zu tun hat? Helfen Sie anderen Kunden bei der Suche nach den hilfreichsten Rezensionen
