Owen Meany is a dwarfish boy with a strange voice who accidentally kills his best friend's mum with a baseball and believes--correctly, it transpires--that he is an instrument of God, to be redeemed by martyrdom. John Irving's novel, which inspired the 1998 Jim Carrey movie Simon Birch, is his most popular book in Britain, and perhaps the oddest Christian mystic novel since Flannery O'Connor's work. Irving fans will find much that is familiar: the New England prep-school-town setting, symbolic amputations of man and beast, the Garp-like unknown father of the narrator (Owen's orphaned best friend), the rough comedy. The scene of doltish Dr Dolder, Owen's shrink, drunkenly driving his VW down the school's marble steps is a marvellous set piece. So are the Christmas pageants Owen stars in. But it's all, as Highlights magazine used to put it, "fun with a purpose". When Owen plays baby Jesus in the pageants, and glimpses a tombstone with his death date while enacting A Christmas Carol, the slapstick doesn't change the fact that he was born to be martyred. The book's countless subplots add up to a moral argument, specifically an indictment of American foreign policy--from Vietnam to the Contras.

The book's mystic religiosity is steeped in Robertson Davies' Deptford trilogy, and the fatal baseball relates to the fatefully misdirected snowball in the first Deptford novel, Fifth Business. Tiny, symbolic Owen echoes the hero of Irving's teacher Günter Grass's The Tin Drum--the two characters share the same initials. Ein wirklich faszinierender Roman, bei dem man sich wünscht, dass er niemals zu Ende geht. Irving hat die Gabe über ganz alltägliche Dinge in einer Art und Weise zu schreiben, die die verschiedensten Leute fesseln. Seine Art zu schreiben lässt einen nicht mehr los und man verschlingt sein Bücher im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Mit Owen Meany hat Irving seine bislang schillerndste Gestalt geschaffe; denn dieser schmächtige Mephisto mit Fistelstimme wirkt gleichermaßen diabolisch und engelhaft, ärgerlich altklug und erfrischend naiv. nie hat Irving die Selbstgefälligkeit und weltvergessene Selbstbezogenheit vieler seiner Landsleute entschiedener kritisiert als in Owen Meany. Mit Owen Meany hat Irving eine Person geschaffen, die jedem auf Anhieb symphatisch aber auch überaus mysteriös erscheint

I've just finished Owen Meany and have been mourning the end of the book at the office all day...This is a great and easy read. Please dive in. Many of the previous reviews have touched on Irving's allusions to Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER which is certainly accurate. But this book is NOT about Hester Prynn. It's about FAITH. Regardless of your religion of choice or lack thereof, Irving builds on questions of faith and doubt throughout the novel which are essential for anyone struggling to understanding LIFE. God? Fate? Motivation? Chance? Divine Plan? Christianity aside, Irving weaves a wonderful modern myth which is difficult to put down. One more thing, my use of capital letters had nothing to do with Owen. Really. I think.

This novel was lifeless. It just dragged on and on, and took me forever to get through it. I do not recommend this novel.
