5.0 von 5 Sternen Great resource and interesting read. 22. Februar 2012
Von Scopey - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is perfect for both beginners when it comes to EDC items such as knives, lights etc but also offers some very interesting points for the more experienced user.
The interviews are well written and I for one was left thinking about what I was carrying and how to use it to its best potential.
The workbook will make it easy for a beginner to work out what they need and why and how to carry or use these items. As a police officer and former soldier infoundrhe book, interesting , helpful and a great little resource that ive found myself going back too a few times .

3.0 von 5 Sternen Practical Guide to Every Day Carry Gear 30. Januar 2013
Von GusKat - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I rate this a three star as I felt it tended to be verbose in several areas and also lacked any pictures or sketches that would have made this a Five Star rating. For example The section on tactical flash lights did not have a single picture of any of the flash lights it was discussing. The section on medical aid equipment also was lacking any pictures or photos of items being discussed which left me out in left field trying to imagine what was being discussed and vaguely on how it should or could be used. Has anyone seen an Israelly field bandage or dressing? There was not even a list of suggested items that you should be carrying in this section for medical situations.
Another area that could have used photos, and or pictures was the section on knives. .A diagram of a knife showing the features being discussed such as "thumb buttons" would be helpful. what the heck are "thumb buttons"
I am new to a lot of this stuff. The authors need to take into account their audience's level of experience and knowledge .

2.0 von 5 Sternen Still Looking For A Practical Guide to Carry Gear... 25. Januar 2013
Von Steven Fox - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
A Very disappointing book. The author of this book is Rob Robideau, NOT Massad Ayoob, NOT Dave Spaulding, and NOT Michael Janich as is mistakenly listed by Amazon. I bought this book BECAUSE Massad Ayoob and Dave Spaulding were listed as authors (Two very bright men who are tops in their fields of expertise. Go search out and read anything by Massad or Dave).

This book consists of 11 chapters. Each chapter is a transcription of verbal interviews with various different 'experts' in the field which that chapter covers. Yes, there is something to be gained from anything uttered by Masssad Ayoob or Dave Spaulding. However, I hesitate to call this a -real- book, as there is obviously no research done, nor references cited. IT IS JUST TRANSCRIBED VERBAL INTERVIEWS. You or I could knock this book together in a day after conducting a few phone interviews... The author wrote NOTHING. The book is ALL just transcribed verbal conversations.

Speaking of chapters... Do I really need an entire chapter telling me How To Select Timepieces (a watch)??? (Chapter 10) Or an entire chapter dedicated to 'Performance Writing Instruments' (The Fischer Space Pen)? (chpater 11) There are three entire chapters dedicated to Flashlights. Use & Selection (chapter 5). Flashlight Technology and it's Progression (Chapter 6). And Flashlight Features & Recommendations (chapter 7). Reallly?

There are three equally disapointing chapters dedicated to Knife Selection & Use (chapter 2). (Made somewhat redeemable by Dave Spaulding's no BS approach to all things self defense) Thoughts on Knives (chapter 3). And Knife Features & Recommendations (chapter 4). Yes, a good pocket knife can be very useful, BUT honestly, if I am threatened with a knife, I am either running or pulling out my gun. Did I mention the word DISAPOINTING, in this review yet?

There are NO pictures of any 'gear' in this book. It is simply verbal interviews, transcribed to paper.

Why did I give it 2 stars? Anything from Massad or Dave is worth reading. Chapters 8 & 9 cover medical emergencies, and emergency medical gear. It is my experience that the average civilian is woefully unprepared to deal with medical trauma. So... Chapters 1 (Massad Ayoob), & chapters 8 & 9 (emergency medicine) pulled this book up by 2 stars.

Do yourself a favor. Leave this one on the shelf. There are much better books available for this type of information. I returned my copy.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Nothing but basic common sense 23. April 2013

This book is written in a strange context of two people giving their opinion of each aspect. The format is lengthy and gave me absolutely nothing the average person wouldn't already know. I was very disapointed

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Resource for Expeditions 29. Januar 2013
Von Shakespeare - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
I research for an expedition company I work with, so someone recommended to check out this book. Mostly we do rock climbing and rafting in the Rockies, and twice a year Arctic Expeditions. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with the latest gear, and more importantly, you don't want to be weighed down by too much, or useless/redundant everyday carry gear (EDC). The practical guide to everyday carry gear delivers exactly what it says: it increases your productivity, safety and overall quality of life by optimizing your EDC gear. When it comes down to the moment, you either have the right tools and info or you don't. Be prepared and do your homework is the bottom line, and this book helps a lot.
