Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Paul Scherz is a physicist/mechanical engineer who received his B.S. in physics from the University of Wisconsin. He is an inventor/hobbyist in electronics, an area he grew to appreciate through his experience at the University's Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics and the Department of Plasma Physics. Dr. Simon Monk has a degree in Cybernetics and Computer Science and a PhD in Software Engineering. Monk spent several years as an academic before he returned to industry, co-founding the mobile software company Momote Ltd. He has been an active electronics hobbyist since his early teens and is a full time writer on hobby electronics and open source hardware. Dr. Monk is the author of numerous electronics books, including 30 Arduino Projects for the Evil Genius and Arduino + Android Projects for the Evil Genius.

The book mixes theory and practice in (indeed) a practical way. For me it has the right level of depth. The book explains most things without referring to other books. The book can be used as a reference, and you can start almost in any chapter reading which is a big plus.

If you want to buy this book you should have knowledge of math including understanding what differentiate, integration and complex numbers are. You should not be afraid from some big formulas.

I rate this highly as one of the best allround books for both inventors, and a good introduction to an experienced amateurs. Plenty of good illustrations and data on how to do this and that with comtemporary electronics today. Also detailed data and info on components and other equipment that one always seems to need. This edition has more in it than the last edition, mainly dealing with digital data methology. An excellent buy, value for money... current and up to date..!!

The "electronics bug" got me after reading Electronics For Dummies: UK Edition. Where "The Art of Electronics" (both The Art of Electronics Student Manual and the The Art of Electronics - the Text) are a bit too heavy for a follow up (don't get me wrong - I enjoyed reading both!), "Prectical Electronics ..." (3. Ed.) gives you a smoother learning curve, esp. as the examples have solutions and therefore it's easier to check your answers.

Alas, quite a lot of typos and mistakes, esp. in the first theoretical part. Most of them are covered by the errata (see: [...]) - so be sure to correct them while progessing thru the book. I would have expected a more detailed review before it was put on paper, esp. in the area that was already covered up in previous editions - therefore but 4 stars.

It also covers recent stuff like CircuitLab, Arduino, ... and a bit of Eagle - also my areas of interest.

Overall impression: A good buy :-)

A good reference book for beginners. Concerning analog electronics all the examples are about audio or low frequency applicaitons. Hopefully the next edition is going to be updated with some chapter on HF electronics.
As a complemet and for deeper insight I would suggest Paul Horowitz's und Winfield Hill's Book.
