Poser 4 Handbook is a truly aweful book. It's best use would be tearing out the pages and blowing your nose on them.

The text is a joke, the tutorials are an insult to the reader's intelligence, and the color plates are up to Mr Shamms Mortier's usual atrocious standard. And most of the content in the last third of the book is adds for Zygote figures and other goodies you can shell out money for.

For instance, in the tutorials section, Mr Shamms Mortier shows us how fantasic a Poser man looks if we turn the head dial all the way up, so his head is stretched enormously. Wow, doesn't that look great. A big-headed alien! Nobody would have thought of doing that, would they Mr Shamms Mortier. We really needed you to show us that one. And then he goes on to show us what happens when the feet dial is turned enormously. Our Poser man gets gigantic feet! Wow! That looks so cool! Again, we couldn't have thought of that ourselves. (Why anyone other than Mr Shamms Mortier would want to make something as hideous as a big-headed, big-footed Poser man is beyond my comprehension.)

Mr Shamms Mortier should grow up and realise that garbage like this book would only a child who likes pictures of brightly colored people, and not anyone with some type of creative ability. I don't know who would pay to suffer the ridiculous content of this book. I gave this 1 star because I couldn't give it zero stars. That is, after all, what this book deserves.

I realise that this is the only book one can buy on Poser 4. If you're thinking of buying this piece of garbage, just play with the dials yourself instead. You will learn a lot more that way.

Be very careful buying this book. The cover of the book promises "over 500MB of Animations, Images, Sounds, BVH motion files, 3D Props, and Demos." In truth, there are 283MB of files, no BVH files whatsoever, of which 100 MB of files that are useful only to windows users, and 100MB of small animation files, leaving only the smallest amount of useful stuff. To make matters worse, the tutorials require the user to buy additional models from Zygote. Finally, much of the book is a rehash of other material, including earlier editions, which is poorly integrated with the whole. However, it is the only real option for people like me who need a little more expansion on the techniques presented in the Poser manual. But I felt really burned by the untruths, and the sneaky marketing ploy of requiring the reader to buy additional models. At $50, the consumer deserves something better than this.

While I'm not necessarily sorry I bought this book, it is disappointing in many ways. It is poorly organized, carries a lot of hash from previous editions that's poorly integrated with the new material, and worst of all the tutorials require you to buy models from a third party vendor, rather than being supplied on the CD as the promotional copy leads one to believe. By the time I finished it, I felt like model supplier Zygote should have subsidized the healthy price tag, given the books total reliance on their expensive models. To make matters even worse, the included CD is poorly matched with the book, and doesn't contain what the books says it does. There aren't many alternatives to this book for the poser student, but ... I expected better.
