Top-notch for comparative tattoo studies

Allen has outdone herself with The Polynesian Tattoo Today. Primarily, this is a picture book full of crisp, clear pictures of amazing art, accompanied by short captions with information on the cultural style, the artist and (where available) the wearer of all the art.
But wait- there's more! At the end of the book is a series of artist profiles, focusing on the artists who have the most work displayed in the book. Primarily, these artists are native to Polynesia, though many cultures and nationalities are represented.
Following that, is an index with artist contact information, and page numbers to their work in the body of the text. This means that you can find a piece you like, look up the artists, look at what else they have in the book, and then contact them.
Overall, this book is an excellent image collection representing the best and widest spectrum of Polynesian and Polynesian-style tattoo today.

Other than the bios of the artists at the end of the book there are few words in this book.
Each page contains a crisp full color photograph of a tattoo adorned figure with a short caption highlighting the most notable aspect of the work. There are no detailed descriptions of the symbolism behind the works of art. That would not be entirely useful given many symbols have a base meaning and then a derived meaning for the individual.
Instead the greatest value of this book is that the author has curated some of the best works spanning the full gamut of polynesian styles- Marquesan, Maori, Samoan, Tongan. This makes it an excellent resource for anyone planning to have one done and needs a strong set of examples to draw from. It is certainly better than hunting for images that are haphazardly strewn over the Internet.

Excellent book about Polynesian Tattoo's history...

I personally own two of Tricia's books. She has a lot of knowledge on the subject and also has tons of interesting pictures within the text. Many of the artist featured in the book are top-notch and professionals. This is a definate buy for anyone interested in learning more about Polynesian tattoos.
