The past few years have seen a spate of new translations of classic texts in philosophy, in part because of more complete texts on which to base the translations and in part because of a desire to render the texts in a more contemporary English. Simpson (classics and philosophy, CUNY) has produced a fresh and lively translation that is perhaps more logically ordered. He makes a strong case for rearranging the standard order of the books of the Politics to provide a sequence more in keeping with Aristotle's intentions, positioning Books 7 and 8 to follow Book 3. The text begins with a translation of Book 10, Chapter 9 of the Nicomachean Ethics, which Simpson argues is a precursor to the Politics. A comparison with standard translations, such as those of Jowett and Barker, indicates that Simpson put much effort into this version and clarified a number of points that earlier translations left unclear. In "Politics" Aristotle states that a democracy should be fully participatory and that it's goal should be the common good of society. Aristotle posits that to achieve this "common good", society must ensure relative equality, "moderate and sufficient property" and "lasting prosperity" for everyone.
What Aristotle was saying was that if any society has an extreme discrepency of wealthy citizens versus poor, any discussion of democracy is hyperbole. For true democracy to happen, skewed extremes of wealth and poverty must be eliminated - creating an egalitarian society based on equality of condition where the wealthy minority cannot use their power to subjugate the poor.
Aristotle also posited that in a perfect democracy which contained a wealthy minority and a poor majority, the poor would use their democratic rights to appropriate property from the wealthy. For Aristotle, this was unjust and to alleviate this possible situation he proposed two solutions: reducing poverty (which is what Aristotle advocated) or reducing deomcracy (which epitomizes the "democratic" society we live in today).
"The Politics" is an illuminating and penetrating discourse on democracy and holds many valuable lessons for constructive social action.

Aristotles "Politics" is one of the most important works in the history of western world. Although the historical setting is different today the ideas disscussed and the problems that Aristotle tries to solve are equally important as they were 2300 years ago.

Aristotle's the Politics is often overshawdowed by his teachers classic, the Republic. However, Aristotle is so much more practiacal and insightful in his book. The arguments Aristotle brings in favor of democracy, private property, and society have been proven the better choice throughout history. One could also see the influence Aristotle had on the writers of the US constitution. However, to get the full scope of what Aristotle is trying to say, I would recommend reading Plato's Republic prior to the Politics.
