    A woman courting ruin…

No one would suspect prim, proper Prudence Etchingham of lusting after her best friend’s brother. Nor would anyone guess that she’s responsible for dozens of the best forgeries in London’s antiquities markets. But if her love for Alex is doomed to fail, she must raise enough money to escape the marriage mart. She just needs one last, daring forgery to set herself up for life…

    A man evading disaster…

Alex Staunton, the rich Earl of Salford, lives a charmed existence. No one knows that he’s dangerously attracted to his sister’s best friend. Nor has he revealed that he suffers from an ancient curse — one that has given him everything, but prevents him from marrying the woman of his dreams. But when an enemy from his past takes an unseemly interest in Prudence’s future, Alex must find a way to break the curse…or risk losing her forever.

    A love they’re destined for…

Every seductive encounter brings them closer together — but their secret, smoldering desires will inevitably burn them. And when Prudence’s illicit forgery collides with Alex’s desperate search, more than their hearts are at stake. Can they break Alex’s curse and save Prudence from her unwanted suitor? Or will their love become a weapon that will destroy them both?

Sara Ramsey writes fun, feisty Regency historical romances. She won the prestigious 2009 Romance Writers of America Golden Heart award with her second book, Scotsmen Prefer Blondes. Her first book, Heiress Without A Cause, was a 2011 Golden Heart finalist. Sara grew up in a small town in Iowa, and her obsession with fashion, shoes, and all things British is clearly a rebellion against her hopelessly uncool youth. She graduated from Stanford University in 2003 with a degree in Symbolic Systems (also known as cognitive science) and a minor in history. She is currently living the hip romance writer life in San Francisco, California.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Fluch oder Muse? 2. Februar 2014
    Von Renate H.
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

2.0 von 5 Sternen The Earl played with fire, but the story got burned 27. November 2013
Von Penny Black - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition
In the first two books of the Muses of Mayfair series, I liked that the main conflict of the story arose from the heroine's willingness to risk their standing in the ton to realize her artistic ambitions. Even though it was missing from the third book, The Marquess Who Loved Me (Muses of Mayfair), I hoped the final installment would recover momentum. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

For a good part of the story, I was tempted to check whether I actually downloaded the right book. The characters, whose personalities should have been familiar, did not act or think as they did in the previous stories. I kept wondering why Alex, a quintessential alpha male, turned into a wimp in his own story, and Prudence, a prim penniless spinster, turned into a reckless ninny with no regard to propriety. Her behavior went a few steps over the line of a woman courting scandal. Inviting Alex to a bar under false pretenses and then going down on him in the back parlor, days before her wedding to another man, wasn't just tacky, it cheapened the romance between the characters.

But, my main problem with the story was the reason why the hero couldn't marry the heroine and live happily ever after. An ancient curse just didn't do it for me, and the love triangle or will-they-won't-they trope added little to improve matters. It makes me sad to admit, but about half-way through the book I started rooting for the other guy. When he told Prudence that they are much alike - he's portrayed as an unprincipled and unrepentant scoundrel - I realized that while I agreed with his assessment of her character, I didn't want him to be saddled with her. She and Alex were a better-suited couple, even if I cared little about either at the end.

Sara Ramsey's fourth Muses of Mayfair book brings all the passion, heartache and delightfully fulfilling love stories that her fans have come to expect, with the benefit here of an ancient curse and some simply unforgettable supporting characters, bringing this thoroughly engaging series to a pitch-perfect close.

Prudence Etchingham has been in love with her best friend's brother for as long as she can remember. But Alex Staunton, the Earl of Salford, seems to see her as a friend, at best, and an obligation, at worst. But, since Alex took her in as a companion for his mother following her family's decline in fortunes, Prudence is forced to live in the same house as the man of her dreams, but to be forever rebuffed by his polite respect.

Desperate to escape the constant heartbreak, Prudence has resolved to earn enough money to live independently, even if it means selling forged antiquities to some of London's wealthiest bidders. She needs only one big, audacious forgery that will provide her the money to escape for good.

Alex wants nothing more than to marry Prudence. But a foolish prank a decade ago has left him cursed and unable to admit to the love that is eating him alive. Seeing the sadness in Prudence's eyes threatens to destroy Alex's hard won control, but it is only when his long-standing rival begins to take a very serious interest in Prudence that he realizes that there is no life for him without her in it.

Series fans will recognize both Prudence and Alex from previous books in this series, but the chance to get into their hearts and under their skin allows all their complexities and idiosyncrasies to come to light. Alex may be an intellectual to his core and far more reserved than the other heroes in this series, but he is not less passionate, and no less driven to claim the woman he desires. I especially loved seeing him through Prudence's eyes. As her love for him developed, all his emotions, his expressions and his glances told a bit more about him, showing not just how deep a character he was, but how deep Prudence's love for him had grown.

For her part, Prudence spends this book walking the edge of despair, but fortunately was too strong to doubt that she could save the day. It is impossible not to feel for her unrequited love or wish along with her that her dreams about Alex would come true. The truth, however, was even better, because in the end, Alex was a far more complex man than Prudence gave him credit, and he loved her for everything that she was, with a love deeper than she ever imagined. Not to mention, watching such a well-controlled man utterly lose his cool in his search for his love was a delight.

The chemistry between these two was consistently sizzling, and desperate, as circumstances combined to keep them apart. I was thrilled to see that their love was strong enough to overcome all the difficulties that society put in their way, and gave them the strength to challenge a three-hundred-year-old curse.

That barrier to their happiness, namely, Alex's curse, may have felt a bit contrived in places, but Sara Ramsey was extremely clever in her plotting, making the stakes for Alex and Prudence--as well as other affected by the curse--quite high, and very believable. It also allows readers a fascinating glimpse not only into the world of British Egyptology, but also an introduction to Prudence's accomplice in her forgeries, a very surprising antiques dealer who I, for one, would love to meet again.

And speaking of secondary characters, Alex's nemesis, the Duke of Thorington, may very well be my favorite antihero of the year. His wit, his utter disregard for conventional morality, and, perhaps, most intriguing, his hidden scars, all combined to make me ready to beg for more about this complex, mysterious man. Rumor has it we shall be seeing him again soon, and I will be first in line to read any book in which he appears, without question.

Though this was not my favorite of the Muses of Mayfair book--the occasional helplessness of the two main characters grew wearing at times--it was a beautifully written, deeply emotional entry to the series by an author who I respect enormously. Her ability to plumb to depths of her characters, to see all their flaws and shortcomings as well as their strengths and beauty, makes every scene feel real and honest and totally engaging.

The secondary characters, names that will be familiar to all series fans, added welcome humor and help throughout this book, and the addition of Thorington only added to an already strong cast. Sara Ramsey's new series will be debuting soon, and I, for one, cannot wait. If it is anything like the Muses of Mayfair, readers and fans of steamy historic romances everywhere will have much reason to rejoice.

    4.0 von 5 Sternen A good read! 8. Dezember 2013

In this the final instalment of the Muses of Mayfair series we follow the story of Prudence and Alex. Prudence has been desperately in love with Alex (her friend’s brother) for years but it would seem that he didn’t return her feelings, she was devastated but determined that she would only marry for love which meant that she had to leave. This seemed a good idea in theory but in reality she is without financial means and would need to make a suitable match so that she can live in security. Refusing to give in she strikes up a lucrative deal with an antiques dealer and makes money by dubious means with the intention of earning more than enough money to buy a house and support herself without having to marry. Although Alex loves Pru he does have a very good reason not to strike up a relationship with her, he does his level best trying to resist her which is not easy as she is currently living within his household as help and companion to his mother.

When I read the first book in this series (Heiress Without a Cause) back in May 2012 I was new to Historical Romance as had never really read very much within this genre. I spotted the book on Netgalley and thought why not, it was well worth a try as I had nothing to lose. I obviously didn’t have very much to compare it to, but I knew that I loved it and found it a very easy and good read so went on to follow Ms Ramsey and eagerly awaited the release of each book.

I loved all the ladies and had really enjoyed each story but had a bit of a soft spot for Pru and really wanted each new release to be her story and now I have finally got to read it. Pru is a strong and plucky character who was well aware that she was not an outstanding beauty and due to her financial position should really marry the first man who asked, but no, she stuck to her guns and refused to compromise and would find other means. I can’t say I approved of how she made the money but I could understand it and in a way applauded her for it. Whenever we came across Alex in previous stories he always came across as a bit of a grumpy character but we got to see him and understand why he was the way he is. I was a bit disappointed with the reason why Alex couldn’t be with Pru and thought it a bit silly, I would have liked to ignore it but it was a big part of the story so couldn’t. I did however like the fact that he loved Pru enough not to risk her and made the decision to let her go. Yes, this is a romance so it was inevitable that he would either find a way or take the risk but I knew that there would be a happy ever after.

I loved catching up with the other three ladies and their husbands and really enjoyed reading the banter between the men as it obvious that over time they have become very good friends. I am a bit sad that this is the end of the series but was excited to hear that Ms Ramsey may revisit the Muses sometime in the future as her new series is written in the same world as them and will feature some of the other characters we have already met. Ms Ramsey has hinted that Christabel (Ellie’s sister-in-law) is of interest to her and that is a story I would like to read so keeping fingers crossed that she decides to write it.

I am looking forward to reading the new series – ‘Heiress Games’ which starts with Duke Of Thorns due for release Spring 2014.

It's interesting to read about forgery in the 1800's and the trouble people can get into. Prudence wants to escape the reality of living in the same house as Alex who she's in love with. She made fake artifacts for the money to escape and live alone. Alex got involved with a curse and won't have her because the curse would kill her. Involved in this story is everyone from the other books and 2 new characters....The Duke and the antiques dealer. The dialogue between everyone is smart and funny. The husbands of Amelia, Madeline, Ellie all get involved with Alex and Prudence's relationship. You already know that the women are as close as sisters and these husbands are also becoming best friends along with being related. I have always disliked Prudence's mother but we now see her in a more complex light. Losing the man she truly loved along with her son's and being left with minimal income possibly caused her greater pain than we could imagine. A widow without adequate funds was a miserable life. Good story and there's one more coming....the Duke who wasn't in the other books but is an interesting and complex character. We've already seen that many didn't deserve the reputation given them by the ton. Perhaps he's going to be the same.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I want these people as my friends! 11. Dezember 2013

I have been waiting for Prudence to get her happy ending and I was so proud of Alex for delivering! This was a wonder finale to a really lovely series. I'm always a fan of strong, willful, real heroines and Prudence is all that and more. Frankly, her secret life surprised me based on the glimpses we'd gotten of her in previous books, but I had found her willingness to take charge of her own life refreshing - it was a unique plot twist and it made her and Alex seem more like equals. Plus, it made them hotter as a couple.

Speaking of hot... no really. Ms. Ramsey continues to deliver on the steam factor!

And while Prudence and Alex are the stars of this story, the extended Muses family makes continual appearances throughout - I want these guys as my friends in real life. Is that weird? Ferguson in particular threatens to steal the scene every time he appears on a page. Just. Love. Him.

Like I said, a funny, sweet, smart conclusion to a great series!
