This is a book for those with understanding and appreciation of cultural differences. This is a book for intelligent and free thinking readers who are able to understand perceptive and witty observations of a people and a culture from an author who very clearly loves living in Germany and loves the Germans.
It is written with wit and well observed, experienced insight and is in no way derogatory to the German people, quite the contrary I would say.
My husband is German and he found Planet Germany hilarious.
As did I and all those to whom I have recommended it.
This is not the place for personal retorts though I'm bound to say, as an ex-pat myself, married to a German and living in Germany, the comment from Kuturbanausin is rather amusing in a sad way. Unfortunately he/she has only managed to prove what all my German friends often, with regret observe. There are Germans out there who still carry the wounds of history. It makes them bitter and amputates any semblance of a sense of humour they may once have had. It's a sad truth but this breed are slowly dying out...praise be.
Buy this book. You will, I promise, not regret it.

I bought this book on recommendation from friends. It is a really funny book to read. Having lived in Germany for over 5 years, I can relate to the stories written in the book. I have many German friends who have borrowed this book from me and also think it is a well written book full of humour (not to be taken too seriously!)
I think all nations comment on one another, I have to listen to the stereo-typical thoughts on people coming from 'The Island' (England), that we only eat fish and chips, it always rains in England etc etc etc. I take it all with good humour and think that readers of this book should also take the comments made about the Germans in good humour.
The writer of this book has many German friends, has lived in Germany for many many years. I am sure her German friends have not taken this book in anyway but good.
From reading some of the negative comments on this book, I can only assume that these posters have not actually read the whole book, either that or they are seriously lacking in any sense of humour.
I would like to read a sequel to this book, so Cathy, please get writing!

Adapting to life in Germany (which I know from experience is not always easy) from truly British perspective.
I kept on thinking "been there, done it and got the t-shirt"
