HASH(0x8f415324) von 5 Sternen The Big Apple -- Not Just for Children 17. Oktober 2011
Von Kathy W - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
This 2011 e-book is one in a series on places you might take your children. Obviously, this one is about New York City. Although it was designed to peak the child's interest in discovering where to go and what to do, it is an asset for both the adult traveler and the child. Since it is an e-book, it is hard to describe the size, but if you printed it out on 8 x 10 paper, it would be about 66 pages in total--so, it is a decent size.

The book begins with a little history and some dates. New York was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, when discovered by Giovanni daVerrazzano. Hmmmm-guess that's where the Veranzano Bridge got its name. Manhattan was purchased by Dutch Colonial Governor Peter Minuit for 50 guilders/approximately $1,000. Want to know why NY is called the Big Apple? Read the rest of the review and maybe I'll tell you---he he he.)

Central Park is the most visited city park in America, with 25-35 million folks visiting it every year. Visit a 34-ton meteorite at the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites. Stroll through the 46 exhibition halls at the American Museum of Natural History, where scenes for films such as Spider Man 2 were shot. When in Times Square, check out the M & M Store, near where the great ball has dropped almost every year since it began in 1907. Check out Bubba Gump Shrimp Company for a fun time and good food. I love Bubba Gump Shrimp and the M & M Store!)

There is tons of info in this little book. Color photos, websites, and hyperlinks are abundant in case you want more info. Addresses and phone numbers are often provided, as well as eateries local to the attraction.

Among the many attractions listed are:
* The Brooklyn Bridge
* Central Park
* Metropolitan Museum of Art
* Grand Central Terminal
* Radio City Music Hall
* St. Patrick's Cathedral
* United Nations Headquarters
* Sony Wonder Technology Lab
* Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum
* Greenwich Village
* Children's Museum of Manhattan
* Statue of Liberty
* Coney Island
* Ellis Island
* And much, much more. . .

NY was named the Big Apple by jazz musicians in the 1930s, who referred to cities as "apples". Since NYC was so big, it became known as "the Big Apple". another neat fact from the book)

I believe a book like this is a fantastic idea, because it gives the child a chance to look at what there is to see and do, a way to participate in discussions with the folks after looking through the book. A way to get excited and involved, and to be able to bring back an appreciation of what they saw to school discussions.

"Mom, I want to see the Empire State Building! Do you know why they built the spire on top of the building?" (answer, picture, and hyper-links in the book).

I love Manhattan and have been there quite a few times in the last 5 years. Having seen some of the places mentioned, I think you will love the book and find it very handy!

HASH(0x8f9d6d20) von 5 Sternen Fascinating Places to Visit 17. Oktober 2011
Von Rebecca of Amazon - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I really enjoy reading the Planet Explorers city guidebooks. Each book gives a brief history lesson and then discusses lot of fascinating places to visit. One of my friends who lives near New York said that Manhattan was purchased for $20 but I'll have to correct them since this book says it was more like $1,000. Reading this book will make you much more knowledgeable than people who even live in New York. I'd be willing to bet that most people living in New York have not been to all the exciting places you will learn about in this book. Some of the facts are amazing like the fact that Central Park has 9,000 benches and 5 million trees and bushes. On your trip to New York you may enjoy seeing a 34 ton meteorite or visiting unique roof gardens. There are also interactive museums, ice rinks and famous bakeries. You might want to see Siberian Tigers or a cherry blossom festival. And who doesn't want to say that they've been to the world's largest store! This book tells you all the coolest places to shop and also directs you to memorable places to eat. Wherever you go there are plenty of restaurants. All I can say in conclusion is that you will love this guide. I've seen New York City in many movies but didn't realize it had so many fun places to visit.

I've been to NY before but never experienced it the way it's presented in this book. It makes me want to go back and see all the attractions we can visit. I can't believe I never knew of the memorial to John Lennon called Strawberry Fields. That is a MUST see for me.
I love all the info the author provides for all the museums we can visit(including a "what's cool section"), along with great places to eat while you're there.
With what I've gotten to read about all the great things to do in NYC, I think I could spend a month there and never get bored. And I know I'd bring this book along with me to help me along the way and to make sure I don't miss a thing.

I LOVE these books and I also see that they have several more for other highly visited places. If you're planning a vacation, writing a paper or are just interested in some cool places I encourage you to check out the Planet Explorers. I think you're going to love them.

HASH(0x8f9eb9d8) von 5 Sternen What you need, before you leave . . . 19. Oktober 2011
Von Robin Landry - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
For a book written for kids, Planet Explorers is one of the most innovative guidebooks on the market today. What makes it such a must-have if you're traveling to the Big Apple? It fits on your smart phone, or ipad, or any other device that gets you onto the internet where this little book really shines.

Wanting to go to a particular tourist attraction in New York? Just hit on a chapter heading that sits at the front of the book just as it would in a ordinary paperback, but instead of looking for the page number, one click takes you right to where you want to go. Say you want to go to Ellis Island, you click on the chapter and from there you find lots of facts about the island such as:

"Ellis Island Fun Facts!
* Between 1892 and 1924, about 12 million individuals passed through Ellis Island. About 35-40% of today's Americans have ancestors that were processed here.
* Several famous people passed through Ellis Island, including composer Irving Berlin, novelist Isaac Asimov, movie director Frank Capra, actor Cary Grant and comedian Bob Hope.
* Ellis Island was once called Oyster Island.
* Ellis Island is much bigger today than it used to be. It was made larger by using dirt taken from subway tunnels. * Ellis Island was also known as Island of Tears because 2% of immigrants were denied entrance to the United States there, usually for having a contagious disease or criminal record." --Planet Explorers Guidebook New York City.

Along with great places to eat and what kind of food they're serving, a must when kids are along for the ride.

Going to Coney Island? Don't forget to have a hot dog at Nathan's Famous. And if you happen to be there for the 4th of July, with this little book you'll know that there's a hot dog eating contest you kids can tuck into.

There are lots of pictures and the whole book is set up to be easy to read with lots of bold chapter headings to keep you on track. There are even hyperlinks to connect you to .org sites if you want to go deeper into the subjects you're visiting.

I love the view from high above the city, and the schematic of the subway system. And there's even a quiz at the end that you can ask your kids(or yourself) to see if you were really paying attention.

I'm going to buy one of these inexpensive books for every city I visit.

HASH(0x8f49e69c) von 5 Sternen Eat, Stray, Love 11. Oktober 2011
Von Amanda Richards - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a very useful resource for families who are seeking a kid's eye view of New York City. Geared towards 10-14 year olds, but suitable for both younger and older adventurers, the Kindle format makes it possible to have it close at hand without giving you the "tourist" vibe you'd get with a regular guide book.

Filled with fascinating historical facts about New York and its attractions, you also get simple, easy to follow advice on how to make the most of your visits to Central Park, Times Square, F.A.O. Schwarz, Bronx Zoo, Ellis Island, The Met, MOMA, the Empire State Building, and more, plus other cool places you may not be familiar with, such as the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, the Children's Museum of Manhattan, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the South Street Seaport et al.

It completes the virtual tour with tips on cool spots to shop, and of course recommendations for great eating spots from among the 19,000 available Manhattan restaurants. There are also bits of trivia with lists of movies that feature New York, people born in New York (Lady Gaga, Anne Hathaway, Colin Powell) and of course travel tips and maps. There's even a quiz at the end to test your newly minted knowledge. The only thing missing is a list of recommended affordable family-friendly hotels (if these exist in New York City) or at least a list of popular, centrally located hotels that welcome family visits.

Highly recommended if you're planning a trip to the Big Apple with kids, as they can make their own choices way in advance of booking the tickets.
