5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful art collection from Pixiv 26. Juni 2012
Von Parka TOP 500 REZENSENT
Format:Taschenbuch
Länge: 1:22 Minuten
Pixiv is one of Japan's largest art community. It's somewhat like deviantART but their website looks totally different.

Pixiv have their own quarterly magazines and occasionally also publish art book collections.

Pixiv Almanac Volume 1 is the English edition of the original Japanese edition Pixiv nenkan 2010 Official Book. There is actually a 2009 edition but for some reason, the 2010 edition was chosen to be the volume 1 in English.

This paperback is 258 pages as compared to the 272 pages for the Japanese edition. I'm not sure if anything significant is missing.

There are almost close to 200 artists featured in the book. It's mainly character art in different anime, manga and CG style. The variety is great except that most are female characters. Hatsune Miku seems like the most popular character and there are many pieces with her. There's only a handful of background art. Most illustrations are quite elaborate and detailed, the simplified anime style is actually rare.

Each artist has only 1 to 2 pages of work featured. Some of them are printed smaller than quarter page size which makes it difficult to look at the details. The good thing is the artists' websites are provided so you can check out more of their art online.

I'm impressed by the quality of submissions. This book really makes me wonder why deviantART don't have anything similar.

It's a great book for those who like Japanese character art.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Would have been better with half the artists / larger art 1. Mai 2012
Von Manuel A. Saez - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
As with any collection of artwork (or art books in general) the main draw is and always will be the art; But what happens when the art is so small that you have to squint in order to make out any discernible details? Granted, I have better than average near-sightedness, and even I had trouble appreciating the work that was put into many of the pieces collected in this book. They were just too small, which admittedly, has now become a pet peeve of mine; why include an artist's work if it is too miniscule to view properly? The book gets a higher rating based on the sheer number of artist's featured, but really, it could have done with limiting the number of them to half of what was ultimately used and give the "best-of-the-best" full page spreads. Some of the work is so amazing, that they are severely gimped by taking up less than 10% of the page.
Also, I understand that Japan has a fascination with Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid, but there were so many images of Miku throughout the book, you have to wonder whose idea it was to showcase that much fanart based on one character. It is the equivalent of having a calendar of the same model in different poses; some people will be into it, but as for me, I like variety. I have nothing against Vocaloid, but so many images of the same design is overkill and should have been saved for a book devoted to said character. What's wrong with releasing a collection devoted to Kinu/Vocaloid? That being said, if you don't mind that at times up to 8 images are crammed onto a page not much larger than standard paper size (8.5"X 11"), you will be treated to some awesome work by some truly talented individuals. I just feel as if their work deserves much better treatment.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautifully printed and translated into English. A must-buy for Japanese art fans. 25. April 2012
Von Riven - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Japanese artist community pixiv puts out a "yearbook" each year entitled "pixiv nenkan". Starting in 2009, there are 3 books thus far, with the 4th book (for the year 2012) right on the horizon.

This book is an English translation of "pixiv nenkan 2010 official book" that is done quite beautifully by Udon Entertainment. It can be assumed that volume 2 will be a translation of the pixiv nenkan from 2011. I am unsure why they decided to skip the true first volume (which was 2009), but since I have the Japanese version, you won't hear any complaints from me.

From Japanese versus English perspective, I'm quite delighted to say that I actually prefer Udon's version to the original. Why? Because they did such a darn good job with the presentation and printing. The images are high quality and glossy, printed on thick matte white paper. The cover is gorgeous; unlike the Japanese original, they chose to print the artist's user icons in color. The glossy squares against the matte cover are just plain beautiful. You can tell they gave this book special treatment. It even comes shrink-wrapped from the factory to ensure it arrives in mint condition. This was a big plus for me, because books I order from Amazon don't always arrive in the best condition. (I've made quite a few exchanges due to scuffs and creases, mind you.)

As for the contents, the book contains a medley of images from pixiv's most prestigious members. If names like Sayori, Marukata, JohnHathway, Cuteg and more are familiar to you, you will see all of them in this book.

If you own the Japanese version of pixiv nenkan 2010, should you buy this book? If you love pixiv and you have the money to spare, yes. It's gorgeous and will support Udon bringing more great books from Japan to the United States. While the contents are mainly images, there are some articles in the back that have been translated into English that may be of interest to you. And of course there is the fact that I actually like Udon's printing more than the original. Once again, Udon has done a positively stellar job translating a fantastic book into English and giving it the loving printing treatment it deserves.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Just Buy It !!! 31. Januar 2014
Von Weikuang Wong - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Some people collect stamps, coins, baseball cards or comic books. I don't do that. Instead, I collect all the best art books. If you collect art books like I do I would say definitely buy this one. The artwork is just amazing!!! If I could give this more than 5 stars, I definitely would. This really is a "must have book"

This book doesn't teach you how to become a better artist. It just shows a collection of artwork from some of the best artists. I don't mind if an art book doesn't teach me any new techniques as long as the artwork in the book somehow inspires me to become a better artist. This book makes me want to practice harder so that someday I could be as good as these artists.

I really wish I could recommend this to everyone. However, because it contains half naked females, I would recommend this to only teens and adults but not children. I also own almost all the other Udon Entertainment art books and I would like to take the time to recommend them all. In my opinion Udon is just the best of the best. I don't work for them. I don't get paid by them. I'm just a fan of their art books.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful Compilation of the best artworks! 25. April 2012
Von Allexia - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
After months of waiting, I finally go this book in the mail!!! This artbook is just simply stunning with hundreds and hundreds of breathtaking images from girls, to fantasy landscapes, to skies, to even photographs of animals! Looking through this book is like opening up a new world of illustration!

One of the main concerns with this book is whether it would contain similar images from the "Pixiv annual" collections. I'll say, this is much different - instead of just including one image for each artist, each artist has one to two entire pages will with at least 3 to 8 pieces from their gallery. The pages even contain short comments from them, what tools they use, their web page and their pixiv user name. I also really appreciate the amount of artists that were featured in this book- there were many talented artists on pixiv that were amazing but never made appearances in the "annual" series but seeing them in the almanac truly gave them the attention they deserved (along with artists that have also appeared in the annual series).

This book is definitely worth its price seeing how it has over 250 pages at a reasonable price of $25! Even the paper quality is reasonable - the cover is thick, glossy card stock while the pages are a little bit on the thinner side but it's not thin enough to see through the pages and it's tough enough not to be easily folded. If this book were over $40, I would still buy this book! Definitely a gem in anyone's Japanese art collection!
