Kurzbeschreibung
One the greatest architectural artists of all time, and certainly the most famous copper engraver of the 18th century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is most known for his terrifyingly original series of etchings of labyrinthine and megalomaniac prisons, "Carceri d'Invenzione". In his own day, he was most celebrated for his "Vedute", 137 etchings of ancient and modern Rome; so renowned were these startling and dramatic chiaroscuro images, imbued with Piranesi's romantic feeling for archaeological ruins, that they formed the mental picture of Rome for generations after. Indeed, Piranesi could be said to have shaped a whole strain of contemporary architecture, as well as the wider visualization of antiquity itself. In our time, he has had a direct influence on writers such as Borges and Kafka and on filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Greenaway. Anyone who contemplates Piranesi's etchings will confront the existential nightmare of human existence and its infinite mysteries.

Format:Taschenbuch
Dieses Taschenbuch im ca. DIN A 5 Format macht das best moegliche innerhalb seiner Grenzen. Die Auswahl von Stichen ist sehr gut getroffen. Layout, Qualitaet des Drucks, Papiers und der Bindung sind hervorragend. Die Einfuehrung ist kurz und stichhaltig. Die darauf folgenden Stiche sind in Gruppen geordnet die eine leichte Orientierung ermoeglichen. Wer Piranesis Stiche kennenlernen will wird mit dem Buch sehr zufrieden sein. Wer Informationen zu Piranesis Person, oder historische Interpraetationen seiner Arbeiten sucht, wird in dem Taschenbuch nicht genuegend Text finden. Christoph Kling, Architekt

Man kann viel Geld ausgeben für gute Drucke und ganze Bildbände - aber für das Kennenlernen des umfangreichen Werkes von Piranesi reicht dieses Büchlein völlig aus. Der Taschen-Verlag hat hervorragende Editionen in ausgezeichneter Druckqualität. Deshalb besonderer Dank an den Verlag und an amazon für seinen hervorragenden Service. steinemusik

A disappointing edition

It always pains me to write a negative review of something. I imagine it is so with most, as buying an item that falls below your expectation is never a good experience. Here, it is doubly so, as books of this type are very dear to me, and I am a big fan of Taschen, both as a publisher of works that would otherwise never see printing again as well as the great quality of many of their books. However, even the best have flaws and Taschen can miss the mark, as they have here.
My main complaints are that the quality of the paper is quite low, the printing is not that great( the books also smell terribly of chemicals ), and for a subject such as this, exquisitely detailed engravings by an undisputed Master, most are far too small and thus, loss of detail is inevitable.
If you are interested enough in such things as antique engravings, and particularly so the fine works of Piranesi, you are likely a serious collector of books. Therefore, the price of a superior edition may not seem terrible. That edition is Piranesi: The Complete Etchings by John Wilton-Ely and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1992, Hardcover). Amazon has it by some sellers for $400+ but you can find it cheaper with some searching ( I acquired a copy for $300, still not pennies, but for very quality books this is a good price ).
The copy I have that I review poorly here is getting donated to the local library.
Finally, I will say again, I hate writing a poor review. But, I'll counter it by saying that many of the Taschen XL series are wonderful, quality books well worth the price here at Amazon.

Quite unbelievable value

I'm reviewing mostly in response to the single, overly low two-star review already here. This is a nice set, period.
I went to the library to compare the $300-400 Wilton-Ely version recommended in the previous review. I must say I was expecting a lot more when considering the enormous price tag. In general, I would say all the images are similarly sized in both editions and the reproduction quality seemed very close if not the same. The Wilton-Ely has nice book cloth and the paper is nicer, yes, but the quality of the images struck me largely as the same. Each image is centered on its own sheet as well in the Wilton-Ely, hence it is has more pages. The previous review leads one to believe the more expensive version to have larger reproductions and more detail which I would say is not the case at all.
This Taschen edition does has a chemical odor that is so common in contemporary publications, that's true.
In light of the comparison, I am completely happy with this edition and think it is a remarkable value. In fact, I can't believe it is this inexpensive. It is not fair to compare a $40 edition with a $400 'fine' edition when the size of images and scope of content is so equivalent. I highly recommend (as an academic and designer).
