Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

I pursued my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois. I had planned to study nuclear physics, but when I discovered in an introductory psychology course that psychology was really a science, I decided that was what I wanted to do. Before changing my major, I talked with several professors and visited their laboratories, and when I saw what physiological psychologists do, I knew that I had found my niche. I stayed on at Illinois and received my Ph.D. Then, after a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Iowa, I came to the University of Massachusetts, where I've been ever since. When I arrived at UMass I established a laboratory where I investigated the role of the limbic system in species-typical and learned behaviors, continuing work I had done at the University of Illinois. I received several Biomedical Research Support Grants and a research grant from NICHD. As I became more involved in textbook writing, I began to focus my attention more and more on this activity and on my teaching. I took the opportunity afforded by my first sabbatical leave to write the first edition of Physiology of Behavior. I very much enjoyed the experience, and this endeavor taught me much more about behavioral neuroscience. I was gratified with the positive response of my students and of the colleagues who adopted the book. The pleasure provided by this response and by the enjoyment of keeping up with the literature and writing about it has kept me going for 11 editions. (I have no plans to stop writing.) I retired from UMass in the fall of 2004 but continue to keep up with developments in the field of behavioral neuroscience and revise my book. The Psychology Department has kindly let me keep an office at the university, which makes it easier for me to continue interacting with my former colleagues. My interests outside of writing include spending time with our family, traveling, fly fishing, skiing, and flying our small airplane." --Neil Carlson -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch .

Solid text, but no MyPsychKit access 4. März 2009
Von J. Rockwell - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
So far (about 4-5 chapters in), this text has proved to be a useful introduction into the field of behavioral neuroscience. I had a limited grasp of the field aside from some undergraduate biology, but the author does a good job of systematically walking the reader through the structure of a neural cell, then the central nervous system, sensory systems, and so on. The book is thorough and well-organized, and having the definitions embedded in the text makes studying convenient. The author's tone/approach is plain-spoken and accessible, so reading through the chapters isn't necessarily a chore (lot of information here, though!).

My major qualm is that Amazon advertises this as part of the MyPsychKit series (which allows for online access, study tools, etc.). Unfortunately, my text (and evidently others in my class who also bought this new edition) did not come with the needed access code. Supposedly, the online access requires a separate purchase, though I haven't had a chance to verify this. Aside from the false advertising, I'd recommend the text as a good, thorough introduction to the subject of behavioral neuroscience.

Best of its Peer Group in Behavioral Neuroscience 16. November 2013
Von Occasional Reviewer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I had this text as one of the texts for both introductory and advanced biological psychology PhD courses. It is indeed an introductory text in behavioral neuroscience, but it is robust. Like most texts that provide an overview of an entire field, some will find it falling short as to depth while others may think it too bold in its mission. I have spent a lot of time with this text, but what has made me appreciate it the most is when I read the literature or other texts on the same subject matter and find myself comming back to Carlson to clarify my understanding. This book makes excellent use of figures, drawings, marginalia, and tables that are truly functional and almost reminescent of Stahl's books, which have you spending more time with the figures than the text they are so well done. That is not to say the text is not well done as well. While one can quibble with the topical transitions, the detail and scope in each chapter is excellent. You get a lot of bang for the buck as to detail while covering a wide expanse of knowledge. Compared to peer texts, this one goes into more detail, but does not compromise clarity. Where does it fit? I consider this the Stryer's Biochemistry of biological psychology or like Moleculcar Biology of the Gene. It is a fundamental text and the best of its peer group.

Well balanced and easy to read 13. Mai 2010
Von Abi - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
This book had, in my opinion, just the right amount of information: the chapters were not too long or overloaded with unnecessary details, but each topic was covered fairly in- depth, and throughout confusing or particularly interesting concepts were highlighted with extra information. This book is a really nice foundation for an introductory behavioral neuroscience course; I still refer to it from time to time. The writing style is easy to read and the case files associated with each chapter add interest. This was one of my favorite textbooks.

MyPsychKit access often isn't available from the publisher right after a new edition is released; sometimes you have to wait for it to become available. Amazon has updated the book's description page to reflect that now, however, so I am giving the book five stars.

Not enough info 3. März 2015
Von Brenna M. - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I am using this textbook for a Physiological Psychology graduate course and I feel like there is not enough information provided. Our teacher gives us great notes so I was hoping to use this textbook as more of a supplement to my notes. But I've found that when I need to look up a definition or need more explanation on a certain concept, the textbook really lacks in this area. Also, its a little dry. One positive- I like the case study introductions to every chapter because those provide relevant, interesting real-world examples.
