Kurzbeschreibung

Februar 2005
Produced in conjunction with the preeminent Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, Aperture's essential series Photography Speaks will be reissued as one newly revised and expanded edition in the fall of 2004. From Matthew Brady to Cindy Sherman, more than 150 artists are represented in this new, combined volume spanning the entire history of the medium. This compendium contains biographical information and an original statement from each artist, accompanied by an example of their work. A favorite with photographers and requisite course material for many students, the discourse on art and artistry contained in this volume is of unprecedented scale, collecting the writing of such diverse photographers as William Henry Fox Talbot, Eugène Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Lewis Hine, August Sander, Man Ray, Weegee, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Robert Heinecken, and Lucas Samaras. New additions include selections from Nadar, William Eggleston, Eikoh Hosoe, Gordon Parks, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Christian Boltanski, and Rineke Dijkstra. The contributors expound on topics such as their method and intentions, the state of the arts, or the medium itself. Photography Speaks has been and will continue to be a vital reference source, an enduring testament to the art of photography and an engrossing text for artists and enthusiasts alike.

After last weeks review of "Photo Box" and a back-handed comment about "the Photo Book" my friend (?) Lalo brought this book over. Hey, Wow, this is one righteous photo book there Lalo.

When you by a photo book by one photographer you hope to come away with about a dozen really great shots. When you buy one of these 'photographer collections' you get hundreds of great photos. And a platform from which to go and investigate some of the stuff that caught your eye.

Well this proves to be just such a book! 150 great photographers spanning over 150 years of photography. From the classics to the avant-gard modern. The book is arranged chronologically; 1848 to 2003. Each photographer gets a facing two page spread. The photo on the right page, and a well written bio-paragraph plus a long 'in the words of the photographer' followup. Which describes what they think of their works, photography, etc.

Adams, Man Ray, Close, crazy Samaras, Srenfeld, Muybridge, Rene Magritte! . . . . Rene Margritte? He was a painter! Well that's just one of the surprises which this wonderful collection has to offer. . . . I say it again. A good gift book for that artsy fartsy friend.

Great book - but drab lackluster cover.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Art speaks for itself. 27. Februar 2014

Nothing worse than visual artists writing about their art. No. Seriously. It's pure drudgery getting through this book. They don't know what they're doing most times and now they rationalize what they did. Yeesh!

The book is an excellent read for students or photographers - with comments written by some of the worlds best and best known photographers. It's what's behind the photos.
