Kurzbeschreibung

Persuasion, Jane Austen’s final published work, is a story of second chances. A very young Frederick Wentworth and Anne Elliot are broken-hearted when their hasty engagement is dissolved due to Frederick’s lack of prestige and lack of money. Eight years later, they are still healing when they are thrust into the same social circle once more - however, in a brilliant turn, now Frederick is Captain Wentworth, a prosperous naval officer, and the Elliot family finds themselves on the brink of financial ruin.

Austen, who suffered her own broken engagement, pens a beautiful tale of the redeeming power of love, and the passion between Frederick and Anne sizzles on the page, even by the standards of 1816. In this wild and wanton edition of Persuasion, read the entire classic and discover the steamy untold portions of Austen’s story that have been lying dormant in the subtext. Who knows, Austen may have included these bits herself 200 years ago - if only she dared.

Sensuality Level: Sensual

5.0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant Re-telling! 27. August 2013

I am so glad I was able to read this version of Persuasion. I've read the Austen original, and so I was expecting this one to be mainly the same but with a smattering of sex scenes added. But Ms. Persell didn't just add sensuality to the text, she added loads of emotion as well. By opening the bedroom doors, the author grips us from the very beginning and sharpens the agony of heartbreak. It becomes more real and a very emotional read from an author who has a good understanding of the era she is writing about.
The original style is not compromised, but we are given stronger, deeper motivations for Anne and Wentworth, so we understand the characters more and become more involved with their story. Who doesn't love second chances? All the love scenes had a purpose, and aside from being really hot, the author put them in places where the emotional stakes were high--we are as embarrassed and hurt when Mrs. Clay and Sir Walter were spied on, we are as devastated when things don't go right between Anne and Wentworth, and therefore more satisfied when things are resolved. It was a brilliant, engaging read and I found myself highlighting text that made me smile or sad...I look forward to reading more from this author.

Note: I was provided an ARC for review in exchange for an honest review. No monetary or other compensation was involved.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Satisfying 14. September 2013
Von Carole "The Romance Reviews" - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

It's Jane Austen's Persuasion...but with a little something extra.

If you've ever read a classic novel with a romantic theme and used your imagination to spice things up amongst the characters within (and you know who you are, you that drooled over Colin Firth in a wet shirt emerging from the lake), you'll relate to the concept of Crimson Romance's Wild and Wanton line of classics that embrace the original author's manuscript, while embellishing it with bits of temptation and titillation that defy the scruples of dedicated classical literature purists everywhere. And, with regards to Frederick Wentworth and Anne Elliott's story, Micah Persell has near perfectly captured Austen's voice and explored some of the subtle nuances of Persuasion that Austen hinted at but never ventured to pursue, such as Mrs. Clay's designs on Sir Walter Elliott.

Dedicated fans of Austen know that a young Frederick and Anne fell in love and that Anne was persuaded by a well-meaning family friend to end the relationship; an event that stifled Anne's youth and beauty and left her filled with regret. Micah Persell deftly adds a tasteful bit of zing to the back-story of the young Anne and Frederick's relationship and does so without ever venturing into torrid purple prose or the pitfalls of our more modern English.

Fast-forwarding the eight years deemed by Austen for a mature Frederick and Anne to cross paths again, there was certainly some leeway to explore other amorous activities among the couples paired in Austen's original storyline but, aside from Mrs. Clay and Sir Walter's activities, Micah Persell maintained the simmering, pent-up sexual focus on Frederick and Anne and merely made matter-of fact but surprising references to Anne's uppity sister Elizabeth's experimentations with the opposite sex.

I would expect very few Austen purists would read this version of Persuasion simply due to the wild and wanton reference, but those that enjoy Austen fan fiction and retellings may find it a pleasurable read if they have no objection to the added scenes of a sexual nature. I found those scenes to be rather tame overall; yet, with regards to quiet, timid Anne and the stalwartly enigmatic Frederick, some actions seemed slightly out of character for the both of them, as some scenes occurred in public venues where the two could easily be discovered while engaged in heavy petting. My other observation is that dedicated readers of historical erotica will find these scenes too tame to meet their requirements.

As for me, a fan of Austen retellings, I appreciated how seamlessly the additional text was worked into the classic storyline and, with Persuasion being my favorite of Austen's works and to be re-read and enjoyed every few years, I was open-minded enough to find the reading experience a mostly satisfying one.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting take on a classic 11. Februar 2014

"Persuasion" is my favorite Jane Austen novel, and I enjoyed this deeper look at the characters. The author (re-author?) did an excellent job of expanding upon the depth of feelings on the part of the hero, Captain Wentworth. Jane Austen only wrote from the heroine POV so while we had a clear view of Anne Elliot's heartbreak in "Persuasion", we didn't see what was happening inside Frederick Wentworth.
The only downside for this read was that the more explicit sex scenes just didn't completely ring true to the time period for me. I would, however, read another book of this author's based solely upon the very good writing related to character.

Definitely not the best book I've read, but entertaining nonetheless. The "wanton" part of it leaves much to be desired, feels a little forced at times.

It is always fun to see what current authors do with Jane's work but after reading this piece, I have to say I prefer when people take the characters into the future past the endings of Jane's books. This blending of Jane's work with steamy scenes didn't work for me. It felt wrong! I realize that people have had tons of premarital sex at every stage in human history and I'm all for a great bodice ripper - I just could not abide it in combination with Jane Austen's actual words.
