David Chelsea's "Perspective!" begins with quite a lot of very silly jokes. Half of the book, 80 pages, is spent covering the absolute basics. Chelsea takes his time establishing the concepts of convergence, the picture plane, the vanishing point. To ensure understandability, the author takes about twenty times the space other perspective books would attribute to these basics. And although I thought "Yes, I know" at the beginning, later on I was surprised to see how much I had missed during previous studies. Chelsea's teaching method is quite ideal - by implementing himself, "David Chelsea", as teacher and the grotesque-looking "Mugg" as an interested, questioning and sometimes lazy student, the principles of perspective are revealed in conversational interaction.
Even more surprising, after those said 80 introductory pages, Chelsea manages to get quite concrete and mathmatical - which has a negative effect on understandability, yet not a completely destructive one. His way of constructing three-point-perspective was new and incredibly helpful to me. In his chapter on circles in space, he even dismisses several drawing methods found in other perspective books as "Wrong, wrong, wrong!". The concluding hints on "Shortcuts to perspective" also proved ultimately helpful.
Although not a complete guide (I once heard about this thing called curvilinear perspective... ;)), "Perspective" offers an incredible amount of information - that is, for ANY book of that size, not only comic books. Four stars for the perspective content, yet six for the teaching method!
Very nicely illustrated, with lots of elaborate examples, and a great testament to Chelsea's ability to use his visual gifts to teach a complex subject.

I found the format quite engaging and entertaining, pretty much like Scott McClouds... Lesen Sie weiter...
