In lieu of an unrevealing Famous-People-I-Have-Known autobiography, the owner of the Washington Post has chosen to be remarkably candid about the insecurities prompted by remote parents and a difficult marriage to the charismatic, manic-depressive Phil Graham, who ran the newspaper her father acquired. Katharine's account of her years as subservient daughter and wife is so painful that by the time she finally asserts herself at the Post following Phil's suicide in 1963 (more than halfway through the book), readers will want to cheer. After that, Watergate is practically an anticlimax.

Katharine (with an a) Graham has led a very full life, and her personal history will be, most likely, very well received by the public, for through it, she manages to answer questions of enduring interest: How do the excessively rich live? How do the rich get rich? How do they stay that way? How does a young, rich woman become more than a woman with lots of time on her hands? She indirectly answers those questions by shaping her family's history with a view toward its stewardship of the Washington Post. Graham, born to multimillionaire Eugene Meyer, a Jew, and Agnes Ernst, an arrogant German, lived such a sheltered life that in college she had to be told how to wash a sweater. Like most men of her time, she did not know how to maintain her material possessions but was well schooled in mind and body (a professional tennis player lived with the family for a while). Beyond her upbringing, Graham manages a controlled but seemingly full discussion of the many sensational aspects of her life: the suicide of her husband, Phil Graham; her rise to publisher of The Post; the Pentagon Papers; Watergate; and the dreadful pressmen's strike, a dispute in which Graham prevailed. In this well-researched memoir, with a cast of fascinating people doing their cameo turns, including several presidents, the photographer Edward Steichen, Thomas Mann, Felix Frankfurter, Warren Buffet, and Ben Bradlee, Graham keeps the sets moving and makes everyone work for her. Katharine Graham has written a wonderful book. Personal History is a gripping work and presented several levels of interest for me.I salute her writing style. Even though the outcome of most of the major happenings are well known to everyone, her manner of presentation keeps the reader's attention as though we can hardly wait to see what is on the next page. History readers have to be pleased with the rich manner in which she presents so many key issues of our time. Her love for family tugged at my heartstrings. Don't we all have tremendous ups and downs with those we love? Some of the more wrenching aspects we will never fully understand, perhaps until we meet a Higher Power. (And I hope not too soon, for any of us!). And she is far too modest about her newspaper. Long before my professional life brought me to this area in 1969, I had heard and read several references that the Washington Post is regarded as one of the top three newspapers in the United States. On a personal note, I admire Ms. Graham as I do Ms. Anna Pettys, a newspaper and business icon in Colorado during the time frame 1940 through 1970. As a working teenager, I was fortunate to be employed on the same street as Ms. Pettys and her many businesses, in Sterling, CO. And as Personal History does for Katharine Graham, a chapter in Great Dames of the Plains presented Anna Pettys as a pioneer, full of courage and strength. In closing, now when I look at the Post's masthead, I can visualize the people who have the responsibility for bringing it to us. And being able to feel as if I have met many of them. Such Unpretentious Name-Dropping,

Well, it's nice to find the rich suffer too. Not that I wish any ill-will on Katherine Graham, but her struggles with the mental illness of her husband, unruly uion workers, and paranoid presidents feel a lot like a normal life, but magnified. She sees a picket sign "Phil shot the wrong Graham," a reference to her husband's suicide, and breaks down in tears. In the middle of a huge strike! Anyway I found this read extremely enjoyable, wise, charitable, honest and gracious. It's engaging from beginning to end, including the strike.

Review of audiotape,

On a long trip made with my sister and mother, we listened to the book on tape and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. It is warm and detailed with true historical information. What else is really nice is that the book is read to you by Mrs. Graham herself.
