I already read "Diaspora" from the same author. This book basically contains the same idea, to be scanned and live in a virtual reality, but where the so called Introdus in "Diaspora" leads to a very abstract and utopian new form of living, "Permutation City" has a lot to say about the feelings and motivations of people to be scanned or not.
On the other hand, the final threat to the universe is much more abstract in this book, but nonetheless very real to the protagonists.
What really overwhelmed me was the unique idea of turning abstract, platonic concepts like Universal Turing Machines and cellular automatons into "real" and usable technology. This is truly a crazy idea, but Greg Egan manages to bring up some good arguments for it.
The number of open questions that arise from this idea are numerous: Ethical questions about the rights of a simulated intelligence, philosophical questions about the reality of a mere idea and about reality itself, theological questions about heaven and hell.
And Greg Egan manages to put all of this together in a thrilling story that runs on different levels.
Read this book if you like hard SF! ;-)

Diamond-hard science fiction has to be the most difficult form of literature in the world. If you had asked me to list three subjects on which it would be impossible to write hard SF, the fundamental nature of reality would have been #2. Forget the Hugo and Nebula; this book deserves a Nobel Prize. "Permutation City" is the only truly perfect hard SF book which I have ever read, and I've been reading Niven and Pournelle since age nine.
Permutation City is the only fiction book I keep in my reference section. As an SF fan since age seven, and a member of the first generation to grow up with computers, it takes an awful lot to give me a sense of future shock. Out of the thousands of SF books I've read, this is one of exactly two books that bowled me completely over. It's like sticking your brain in a high-voltage electrical socket. Read it or else.

This novel starts with a lot of stimulating concepts on mind,
consciousness, and intelligence, all packed into a good plot
that seems to develop well. Unfortunately, the end is less
convincing, it almost seems like the author had lost interest
somewhere along the way. A bit disappointing, but still a good
read.
