What is most notable about this funny, touching, memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the resounding accuracy with which the author captures the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood. Charlie is a freshman. And while's he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. He's a wallflower--shy and introspective, and intelligent beyond his years, if not very savvy in the social arts. We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to someone of undisclosed name, age and gender; a stylistic technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness saturating this teen's story. Charlie encounters the same struggles many face in high school--how to make friends, the intensity of a crush, family tensions, a first relationship, exploring sexuality, experimenting with drugs--but he must also deal with the devastating fact of his best friend's recent suicide. Charlie's letters take on the intimate feel of a journal as he shares his day-to-day thoughts and feelings:
"I walk around the school hallways and look at the people. I look at the teachers and wonder why they're here. If they like their jobs. Or us. And I wonder how smart they were when they were fifteen. Not in a mean way. In a curious way. It's like looking at all the students and wondering who's had their heart broken that day, and how they are able to cope with having three quizzes and a book report due on top of that. Or wondering who did the heart breaking. And wondering why."
With the help of a teacher who recognises his wisdom and intuition, and his two friends, seniors Samantha and Patrick, Charlie mostly manages to avoid the depression he feels creeping up like ivy. When it all becomes too much, after a shocking realisation about his beloved late Aunt Helen, Charlie checks out for awhile. But he makes it back to reality in due time, ready to face his sophomore year and all that it may bring. Charlie, sincerely searching for that feeling of "being infinite" is a kindred spirit to the generation that's been slapped with the label X. --Brangien Davis, Amazon.com

5.0 von 5 Sternen Incredibly moving, 11. April 2002
The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a book I put off reading for a very long time. I thought I would not be interested in the plot or (even worse) hate it altogether. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. The book is a sort of diary outlet for the lead character "Charlie" (That could be his real name, and it could not). Charlie writes to his "friend" quite often as his life becomes increasingly complicated. He looks at life with a refined wisdom and a long line of new feelings every day, he has an undeniable innocence and a good character development.

The book is tragic in a way. I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't read it, but it is heartbreaking to realize why his character is the way it is. On the way to all that sadness, however, are some wonderful times with his friends Patrick and Sam and a lot of the usual self-discovery themes. The book tends to revolve upon Charlie's school reading assignments, and there are often veiled references to characters and plots from the stories mentioned.

The perspective on life is fresh and light, with very little unnecassry information to drag down the plot. It's a book very similar to The Princess Diaries or "Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging," yet keeps a very clear and refreshing plot. This is a book every teen would enjoy.

This is my favorite book in the world. I highly recommend it. Charlie is a character that is very easy to relate to, and I could barely put this book down.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Book review of the perks of being a wallflower, 21. Februar 2006
Diese Rezension stammt von: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Taschenbuch)
"The perks of being a wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky is a suspensful and touching novel which tells about a fifteen years old boy named Charlie, whose life is a mess, because he is mentally disordered and does not talk really to anyone of his thoughts.
The novel consists of letters which are written by Charlie to an anonymous person. Usually I do not like such novels with letters, because I found it really boring.
But the way how the events are told by Charlie are very frank an honest which makes the content interesting.
In the first part of the book, you get directly the impression that Charlie is a freak and strange. But these characteristicals make the novel extraordinary and you as a reader, get the chance to know the usual teenager problems from an other perspective of view. His taste of music, books and movies do not suit me, too. But the way he thinks about it is very special. This is also a fact that Charlie is different to the others in his age.
The most I like of the novel is that Charlie thinks much and deeply about the life. It has forced me to make more thoughts about my own life.
But one aspect in the novel I found really hard is that there are too many shock topics which are happening to one teenager, as there normally are.
In this case there are topics like homosexuality, suicide, death, illness, sexuality, drugs, relationships, rape etc.
Maybe this is a little bit inadequate, but in the other hand it opens the reader many aspects which can happen in life.
Finally I would recommend it to read, especially for teenager, because the feelings, thoughts and written style is very special and interesting.
