What is most notable about this funny, touching, memorable first novel from Stephen Chbosky is the resounding accuracy with which the author captures the voice of a boy teetering on the brink of adulthood. Charlie is a freshman. And while's he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. He's a wallflower--shy and introspective, and intelligent beyond his years, if not very savvy in the social arts. We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to someone of undisclosed name, age and gender; a stylistic technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness saturating this teen's story. Charlie encounters the same struggles many face in high school--how to make friends, the intensity of a crush, family tensions, a first relationship, exploring sexuality, experimenting with drugs--but he must also deal with the devastating fact of his best friend's recent suicide. Charlie's letters take on the intimate feel of a journal as he shares his day-to-day thoughts and feelings:
"I walk around the school hallways and look at the people. I look at the teachers and wonder why they're here. If they like their jobs. Or us. And I wonder how smart they were when they were fifteen. Not in a mean way. In a curious way. It's like looking at all the students and wondering who's had their heart broken that day, and how they are able to cope with having three quizzes and a book report due on top of that. Or wondering who did the heart breaking. And wondering why."
With the help of a teacher who recognises his wisdom and intuition, and his two friends, seniors Samantha and Patrick, Charlie mostly manages to avoid the depression he feels creeping up like ivy. When it all becomes too much, after a shocking realisation about his beloved late Aunt Helen, Charlie checks out for awhile. But he makes it back to reality in due time, ready to face his sophomore year and all that it may bring. Charlie, sincerely searching for that feeling of "being infinite" is a kindred spirit to the generation that's been slapped with the label X. --Brangien Davis, Amazon.com

Incredibly moving 11. April 2002
Format:Taschenbuch
The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a book I put off reading for a very long time. I thought I would not be interested in the plot or (even worse) hate it altogether. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. The book is a sort of diary outlet for the lead character "Charlie" (That could be his real name, and it could not). Charlie writes to his "friend" quite often as his life becomes increasingly complicated. He looks at life with a refined wisdom and a long line of new feelings every day, he has an undeniable innocence and a good character development.

The book is tragic in a way. I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't read it, but it is heartbreaking to realize why his character is the way it is. On the way to all that sadness, however, are some wonderful times with his friends Patrick and Sam and a lot of the usual self-discovery themes. The book tends to revolve upon Charlie's school reading assignments, and there are often veiled references to characters and plots from the stories mentioned.

The perspective on life is fresh and light, with very little unnecassry information to drag down the plot. It's a book very similar to The Princess Diaries or "Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging," yet keeps a very clear and refreshing plot. This is a book every teen would enjoy.

Charlie is a 15 year old boy and at first sight he and his surrounding area seem to be very normal and average.
Charlie writes in form of letters to an anonymous friend about being a freshman at high school and the problems arising during his process of becoming adult, the difficulties of making new friends, his first love Sam and her homosexual stepbrother Patrick. But in comparison to many other young adult literature "The perks of being a wallflower" contains much more issues than expected. To the heavier and deeper going problems for example the suicide of his best friend Michael, the pregnancy and later abortion of his sister and the sexual molestation by his beloved Aunt Helen, Charlie needs a valve. To reduce the pressure caused by all the events packed with emotions happening within his first year at high school he starts drinking, smoking cigaretts and even pot and doing acid. These refuges help him to forget about what his Aunt Helen had done to him for years and to deal with the new expectations target on him, the feelings he experiences for the first time, the tensions within the family and his mental instability.
This mental instability multiplied with other factors producing mental pressure leads to nervous breakdowns. Since childhood Charlie often has been under psychological treatment. Retrospective he mostly doesn't remember what happened but he can imagine the strangeness and that always shocks him anew.

Charlie is sempiternal on search of himself and the overwhelming feeling of being infinite.

I have to admit that Charlie - his trueness and emotions - really touched me and the feeling of being close to him grew stronger with every sentence he wrote. I can only recommand the book to everybody - it's for sure attractive to more than one group of age because it's easy to identify with the protagonist and his daily experiences.

The novel "The perks of being a wallflower" is a book about the freshman Charlie who writes letters to an unknown person about his feelings and his thoughts. In the course of the book he gets to know the two seniors Sam and Patrick who make him participate, who become his best friends and who help Charlie to find his identity. Charlie writes in diary style that means that he reveals his feelings and doesn't show any inhibitions. That's why this book gets so personal and unique, because the reader can easily reconstruct the protagonist's mind and gets moved by his unfaked descriptions. Through this book you can learn much about american culture because it describes typical american favourites of music, literature and movie of the 90`s, for example the books "To kill a mockingbird","The catcher in the rye", the TV-series "M.A.S.H." and the song "Asleep" by the Smiths. We all agreed that 'The perks of being a wallflower' is a very special book. Since it is written in diary style it offers unique insights to a youngster's life. In the course of the novel we got to know Charlie as well as we maybe don't even know our best friends, because Charlie talks about problems that seem to intimate to talk about. "The perks of being a wallflower" shows especially to the young readers that they aren't alone with their problems of growing up and it can help them to get through it as well as adults can find ancient memories about the most exciting time of life.
