Only half Michel Thomas 16. Dezember 2012
Von Christie Hall - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I have purchased other Michel Thomas French CDs. His precise translations and ability to equate those to English were both charming and useful. Most CDs give the overall meaning of a phrase, without breaking it down. Michel Thomas, in breaking down the parts of a phrase, gives you the tools to use the words in other contexts. He draws connections to English that help in usage and memorization. Half of the CDs in this collection do not feature Mr. Thomas, however, instead, they revert to glossing-over translations so prevalent elsewhere. The woman recorded invokes his name often, but does not use his techniques. At $75, I was very disappointed.

Sloppy Publishing: Perfect "Franch" 11. Januar 2015
Von Stephen Wolgast - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
The CD labeling is profoundly sloppy and problematic for customers who rip the files to play on a portable player.
- The naming is inconsistent making it difficult to identify the lessons and to make a play list.
- Some of the discs have the same names as discs from the Total French so that those files are over-written by Windows Media Player
Note the names stored on the disc titles:
-----
Perfect Franch [Disc 1] ... {“Franch”?! Perfect indeed!}
Unknown Album (23/07/2011 10:51) Disc 2 ... {Unknown to Hodder & Stotten?!}
Michel Thomas Disc 3
Michel Thomas Disc 4
Speak French Disc 1 ... {Vocabulary Disc 1; it will over-write Disc 1 from “Total French”}
Speak French Disc 2 ... {Vocabulary Disc 2; it will over-write Disc 2 from “Total French”}
French Vocabulary (Disc 3) ... {Vocabulary Disc 3}
Review ... {contains no review material, only setup utilities}
-----
I'm confident the training content is great, but it takes hours to get it all loaded onto a player due to the sloppy naming. The same sloppiness was evident with the Total French CD's.

Better to start with Michel Thomas for French than to start trying to read it! 9. April 2014
Von Gary1836 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
As a note, this is the second set in the study group. Don't start with this set. You need to start with Thomas French Total, then move to Thomas French Perfect, and then to Thomas French Masterclass.

After studying 5 languages - Latin, Spanish, German, Italian, and now French, I can definitely say that you should start with Michel Thomas to learn French. If had started out in a traditional class listening to someone reading French while looking at the words, I would probably have pulled my hair out! The spoken words in most cases look nothing like the written words, even after taking other languages. Except for the consonants, C,R,F, and L, most other final consonants in words are not pronounced. Then the French take a normally unpronounced final consonant and not only pronounce it, but stick it on the front of the next word if it starts with a vowel or an always unpronounced H. On top of that, they run words together and don't pronounce entire syllables and even words in some of the most common expressions. But with Michel, even though he tells you what it is, and explains it, what you learn is the way to speak like a Frenchman. He has a fairly strong accent, but it only takes a little while to get used to it, but it's a lot better to learn from someone who grew up speaking the language and knows all the tricks that to learn how to pronounce French from a non-native speaker who learned it from another non-native speaker.

Given that, it is obvious that Michel Thomas is excellent for learning conversational French and how to actually communicate well in a French speaking country. Even if you are wanting to learn French for some competency exam, I would still start with Michel and then add books, aides, and possibly classes after that. For proof of how hard it is to learn to read and write French, I read in a book that French children have a terrible time in spelling contests. And they clearly learned how to speak French first.

Finally, after watching many French films and hearing many different dialects, I did some research and found that today, there are still about 20 recognized dialects in French all pronouncing French at least slightly differently, and in some cases, quite differently. In that book a Frenchman (obviously a scholar from Paris), was quoted as saying that almost no one, including the French people , pronounce French correctly. So bottom line, is that with Michel, you are learning how to speak French with what is clearly a native French pronunciation, and from someone who spent years on trying to develop his method that allows you to build quickly to being able to speak and make yourself understood in a lot of common situations. And if you learn from Michel, I think you might surprise that Parisian scholar and make him at least think that you learned how to pronounce French correctly!

Michel Thomas method- the best of them all! 30. März 2015
Von BR Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I studied French at school, but Michel Thomas method is unbelievable! As someone put it, I learnt more for few months listening to CD's then for several years at school. But, having that base from school did help with understanding his method much better. I really love his approach. I bought his Total French method, this one and also Vocabulary one - Master Class. Will review the last one once I listen completely (got it few days ago).
I loved all CD's but the very last ones when people from company are doing vocabulary instead Michel Thomas. I know they meant well, but Thomas Michel would probably turn upside down for some of the practices they use in teaching us new words. I did not liked it. But, I am giving 5 stars because I believe it is well spent money, I really enjoyed and still go back to CD's with past tenses.

Love Perfect French Series 27. Dezember 2012

This series is fabulous. It picks up where Total French ended and includes Future tense and simple Past tense.
I highly recommend it.
