This is the author's highly acclaimed debut novel. Two men, an architect, Guy Haines, and a psychopath, Charles Bruno, meet on a train to swap murders. Charles will kill Guy's wife Miriam and Guy will kill Charles' father. A chance meeting and a rash conversation will trap Guy Haines, almost against his will, in a nightmare. This is a cunningly plotted melodrama and I read it with thorough enjoyment. Alfred Hitchcock shot a film baring the same name and the movie is equally thrilling. Classic suspense is still the best in my view!

In this audiobook, Mr William Roberts reads Patricia Highsmith's "Strangers on a Train" with plenty of enthusiasm and I enjoyed his voice very much. He manages to adapt his intonation beautifully according to the situation, at times tense, then hilarious, then serious again. A great performance.

This is a book well worth reading. Even if you have watched
the Hitchcock movie (who hasn't?) the plot will grab you yet
again.
Guy meets Bruno on a train trip and Bruno - who is obviously insane - suggests that they swap murders. Guy thinks this is
a joke and does not think about it once he parted company with
Bruno, but then the madman makes good on his promise and kills
Guys - bitching - wife. And he demands of Guy to keep his side of the bargain by killing Bruno's hated father. If not, Bruno will arrange some proof that Guy is really the murder of his own wife.
The situation grabs the reader with a vengeance. Here we have
a protagonist who gets into trouble without his fault and the
way he has to fight to get out will keep the reader nailbiting until the very end.
Hats off to Pat Highsmith. This is the best one she ever wrote.
