Pressestimmen

Refreshing ... beautiful ... academic but lively ... the book offers the experience of immersion into the strange, romantic and occasionally frightening world these songs were, and are, a part of ... A triumphant addition to the English folk canon, both as a source of reference and as an endlessly enjoyable collection to dip into (The Times)

The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs couldn't be better timed ... an utterly indispensable collection of music for murder, wooing and wanton abandon (Record Collector)

Compelling ... fascinating and refreshingly objective ... Free of any cloying romanticism, [Roud and Bishop] are willing to point out the many quirks and flaws in the progress of the art form, and show how ideology, nationalism and class all played a part in forming our wide notions of folk today ... An impressive and nourishing book, with an appeal far beyond the folk aficionado. Roud and Bishop have created something vital (Telegraph)

A wonderful resource of knowledge and scholarship (Tim Cumming Independent)

Update of the most significant collection of English Folk Songs ever 6. März 2014
Von Joseph R. Offer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
There is no more significant collection of English folk songs than the Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, which was edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams himself. This book honors the earlier RVW collection and the Malcolm Douglas update, and adds to it admirably. If you want to know English folk songs, you need to have this book.
Great book 21. Juni 2014

This is a huge compilation which includes both lyrics and scores. The typeface is very crisp and clean. It does not, however include all of the songs from the Lloyd-Vaughn Williams edition, but I now realize that it was unreasonable for me to expect it to. Highly recommended.
Fantastic content, but the Kindle version leaves a bit to be desired for navigation 17. Januar 2014

Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is a marvelous book for the songs themselves (as you'd imagine!,) especially with the melodies printed, too, but the real joy here are the notes. You'll learn where the songs were collected, what the context historically and socially is, which earlier songs they may have been based upon, whether the songs were sung by women or men, and where, geographically, the songs originated and flourished.

Only the Kindle edition is easily available in the US (or was when I bought it; I would have preferred a paper copy) and my only real complaint is that skipping back from the notes to the songs is a simple prospect, but getting to the notes from the songs is not. I found myself reading the notes at the end, getting the history and the context, then clicking over to the song--then back to the notes. A little unwieldy, but doable.
