I bought this one to go along with my Sheaffer Prelude in inox finish. I am not a big enthusiast of fountain pens, I just recently decided to by one and got a Waterman Hemisphere which I thought that it was terrible! Since I was so disappoited I decided to return it and get a Sheaffer Prelude instead. The Sheaffer is great compared to the Waterman! (Read my review on the Watermen for more info at amazon.com or amazon.co.uk, I can't remember where right now...). I'm happy with my Sheaffer but fell in love with the Pelikan m215 and since it was on discount I decided to buy it and complete my small collection of two pens. I received it and gave it a try. In terms of looks the pen is gorgeous, very refined and elegant. The finish is brilliant and you can sense right a way that this is a quality pen. In one word it is indeed a pen of good taste. In terms of writing, it is very smooth, similar to the Sheaffer. Although both pens have medium nibs, the Pelikan produces a narrower line which I prefer. The other thing is that the pelikan as a more flexible nib that produces a more characteristic line, typical of fountain pens whereas the Sheaffer produces a more uniform line that looks like it has been made by a rollerpen. This is, for me, a point in favour of the Pelikan. The filling of this pen is made through piston filling which completes the classic overall feel of the pen. I filled mine with pelikan 4001 brilliant black ink and the results where very good. This ink is very dark and flows very well on to the paper. Even with normal quality paper it doesn't go through to the other side making therefore a mess.
There are only two things in this pen that did not produced a good impression on me. The first one is a personal one and is related to the weight of the pen. I am used to the weight of my Sheaffer so a found the Pelikan a bit on the light side. The second one is related with the packaging. The pictures show that the pen show be packed in a nice square box filled with foam and complemented with what seems to be a small case or notebook. My pen came packaged in a very simple cardboard box that was nearly the size of the pen and didn't even have a garantee document or something similar. I really feel that this kind of quality product deserves better...By the way, this was the only reason for me to give four stars to the pen.
In conclusion, I must say I am very satisfied with this product and recommend it to any one who wants a fountain pen but doesn't want to spend too much. The Sheaffer Prelude is in my opinion a very nice pen although not quite on the same league as the Pelikan. In my opinion the Hemisphere doesn't even deserve to be considered as a choice...
