When a Hell's Angels^-type biker from L.A. appears at Ash Lawn, the historic home of James and Elizabeth Monroe in Crozet, Virginia, and is later found murdered, the town's close-knit residents, already ears-deep in midsummer gossip, are only mildly curious. They are much more concerned when they learn that a computer virus has infected the Crozet National Bank (there seems to be a $2 million deficit), and the bank's president is killed. It is up to postmistress (the term she prefers) Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, aided by her tiger cat, Mrs. Murphy, and Welsh corgi, Tee Tucker, with their feline friend, Pewter, to connect the two events--not before another victim turns up--and unmask the murderers. Although the historical setting proves peripheral and some readers may find the talking, crime-solving animals a bit much, others will applaud Rita Mae and her cat coauthor Sneaky Pie Brown's fourth literary excursion into mayhem and murder. I have to confess -- I figured out "who done it" almost as soon as the first murder victim was introduced, and never really worried about the resolution of the crime. I also find Ms Brown (or maybe it's Sneaky Pie) a little wooden as a writer. And I almost never enjoy cute stories in which animals think like little people in fur pajamas.And none of that mattered one whit as far as my enjoyment of this story was concerned. Despite the fact that I was positive I knew who the villian was (and I was right) I still read this whole book in one happy sitting. I like these characters (especially Miranda Hoggendobber, who gets more likable as the series goes on!), Harry is an entertaining heroine who nicely balances "feistiness" and brains with empathy, and the animals... well, they aren't one bit realistic, but are entertaining enough that I am willing to suspend disbelief, just this once. (My animals say mroe with their ears and tails than these incredibly "talky" critters, but Mrs Murphy, Tee Tucker, and Pewter are nicely drawn enough that I don't mind the fact that they are more human than animal.) Just one thing -- every time I read about Simon the possum, I cringe. Dear readers, if you allow wild animals into your horse barns, please draw the line at possums, who are a primary carrier of a parasite that causes an extremely serious and often fatal neurological disease in horses. I know, I know, it's only a story. Just keep EPM in mind in real life, and make sure the only barn possums you permit are in these pages, all right? I first read this series when I was in sixth grade. And since then I, I am now in 9th, I have read the series many more times. This particular book is my favorite of the bunch. IT's full of fun and adventur I can enjoy over and over again. I find the characters charming, especially the animals, and the mystery keeps you guessing at every turn. Every time I pick up this book I still find myself itching to find out who it is. MAybe I have brain laps, but it always stays exciting for me.

I don't care if the animals talk or not, they are still a very good part of the story. I like the fact that they are totally loyal to Harry, and care so much about her. The writing is great and very enjoyable to follow, you wait for the next set of happenings to see if it matches what you thought was going to go on. Being able to figure out "who done it" is just part of the good fun of the entire series of books. Reccomend for a good read and a fast one.
