"There goes the neighborhood," many say when two lesbian and two gay New York couples move into a quiet Florida retirement community. The 50-to 60-something newcomers have planned their retreat from fast-track careers and the AIDS epidemic, and they wish a quiet, comfortable life. Instead, one zealot circulates a petition barring the purple paint jobs on their new homes and, by implication, their lifestyle. The community clubhouse refuses a family discount to one of the lesbian couples, who sues. The stresses on the four couples become internal when post-retirement workaholism and passionate physical infidelities threaten the bonds between the eight committed friends. Having begun with slyly humorous send-ups of the local bigot and womanizer, the book turns especially serious as cracks in the protagonists' relationships threaten to become canyons and death invades despite the sunny locale. Salvatore has crafted an interesting exploration of the family-like ties among older gays and lesbians. Whitney Scott

It has a twist

This is a book about a group of gay and lesbian friends who decide to retire and buy houses near each other in an exclusive Florida community. You get a chance to see how older members of the "family" adjust to living together and to trying to mix in with the rest of the neighborhood. There is a twist ending to one of the relationships that lingers with you. This just isn't what you expected to happen. It's hard to get into the book though because there isn't a lot to relate to in the characters. A longer book might have done the story more justice.

Hope I'm That Young When I'm Old

The premise... Four elderly (60-ish) couples decide to build homes at Paxton Court and retire together there. All the homes a painted shades of purple and the neighbors have mixed reactions. I must admit it was a little difficult for me to think about couples in their twilight being sexually active (at least as active as these folks are), but Salvatore does such a nice job keeping things realistic and tasteful this reader forgot how old the characters are.
This is truly a great love story -- not only within each couple, but between the eight friends. As they deal with one especially troublesome neighbor, they make fast friends with several others who know about and overlook their "lifestyle."
This isn't one I'll keep permanently on my bookshelf, but I'm glad I got the chance to read it.

Best Book I've Read This Summer

I was a little hesitant to read a work of fiction by a Lesbian writer, but I decided that I would give this author a try- boy am I glad I did! I had feared I would have to read lurid details about the sexual acts between two consenting adult women, and it was there. However, it was done very tastefully and lovingly by the author, and she even details an encounter between two men in a hot Florida nightclub- one man very young and inexperienced, the other definately not young physically but still feeling his youth inside. The "twist" at the end kept me riveted and wanting to keep reading every page so that I could learn what happens next. It was a very good read for the Summer- short, and oh so sweet.
