Kurzbeschreibung

8. April 2014
Paul Pope's new graphic novel Battling Boy debuted at number 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and the original art is now the focus of a series of traveling art exhibits in the United States and Europe. Image Comics presents Pope's large, lush, brushy original drawings, represented here in detail, photographed from the actual art boards, with minimal editorial interference or digital editing. This is a wide sampling from the various touring exhibits, featuring the art in its original format, with text in English, French, and Italian. The book focuses on the subtleties of the drawings in process, replicating the experience of seeing the art in person. 63 originals from Battling Boy are showcased, along with detailed close-ups of the pages. A critical essay by Charles Brownstein, executive director of CBLDF, is included. Pope himself contributes an essay on the influences behind Battling Boy, as well as his process and technique.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Begleitbuch zur Ausstellung von Originalseiten 13. April 2014
Von Jo84 TOP 500 REZENSENT
Format:Taschenbuch

1.0 von 5 Sternen Soul-crushing disappointment to be had by all 15. Juli 2014
Von S. Robert Katz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
It would be impossible to overstate how bad this binding is. It's entirely unacceptable and ruins what should be a nice collection of Pope's work. Pope is my favorite comic book artist, and I'd buy anything he ever did, but I urge anyone to stay as far away from this mess as possible until there's a new edition where the binding doesn't completely ruin the pages. It's the second worst binding I've seen in my life (after the Marvel Visionaries: Joe Madureira collection that notoriously had all of its pages fall out entirely) and it flat-out ruins the experience. They should have destroyed the entire print run and started over. The idea that anyone thought it would be okay to release this to the public is outrageous. Horrible and unprofessional. I'm very angry about this, in case you couldn't tell.

As a side note, the reproductions are bafflingly small. My biggest (only?) gripe with Battling Boy is the near-digest size of the book, which is standard fare for First Second publications, but makes little to no sense for an artist as good as Pope. The bigger the better for his work, and especially for his hand-drawn lettering. So while I wasn't happy to shell out more money for larger reproductions of his work, I was excited to see the dimensions of this book, which should be a stupendous showcase for his lush art. But for some strange godforsaken reason they've chosen to add frames around every page that reduce the size of the reproductions drastically. We're talking inch-wide margins all around and very few pages that take advantage of all the space this book affords.

So yeah, it's a total wreck. The art is gorgeous and Pope is amazing, but this collection is a travesty.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Great Art, Crappy Book. 8. Juli 2014
Von DS Illustration - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger Paul Pope than myself, so I'm sad to say, this book is extremely disappointing.

This book is printed on 80 lb text paper, the absolute thinnest paper available. It's akin to the kind of paper they print coupons on in your weekly circular. It's so thin, in fact, that you can see the image from the reverse side of the page right through the image you're trying to enjoy. Even the cover is an extremely thin cardstock. Add to that a really poor binding job, and what you've got is a book that likely won't last a week of actual reading. The humidity in the air was enough to mangle this book into a warped mess before I even opened my package.

On top of that, the reproductions are really sub par. I've always loved that Paul Pope prints a lot of his comics oversized, so when I first bought Battling Boy, I was pretty disappointed in how small it was. I was excited that this book would be a chance to really showcase the work in a more deserving format... but it doesn't.

Despite the book being 9x12 inches, the majority of the reproductions are printed at the same size as they appear in Battling Boy. The designer just left a bunch of blank page around the image! As for sharpness, the quality of the reproductions is extremely soft, as if they used the same exact scan from the smaller format.

I suspect the hardcore Paul Pope fan is going to buy this book regardless, and in all fairness, there are quite a few full bleed pages peppered throughout, as well as some preliminary concepts, which save this book from being a total failure.

Overall, this book is poorly designed, poorly printed, and lacks content... the absolute antithesis of what I've come to expect from our 'Pulp Hope'.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Underwhelming Representation Not Worth Its Cover Price 10. Juli 2014
Von Cherrio - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Diamond originally solicited a 240+ page "Art of Battling Boy" book to be released with all kinds of bonus content. Eventually they changed the description in the retailer view to reflect even more pages. That book was never released and instead "Monsters & Titans" was published by Image Comics.

This book contains reprints of the original Black and White art from Battling Boy. What is nice about this is that you get to see the process of how the art was created. You'll find signatures in the boarders, small comments, scribbles, and the like. This can be a great way to connect with an artist when it is presented correctly. Unfortunately, what we have here are smaller original art pieces reprinted onto larger pages with wasted white space all around. This presentation ends up feeling underwhelming and undeserving of Pope's art.

There are 8 short paragraphs printed throughout the book in multiple languages that read as a guide to the original concept straight from the mind of Paul Pope. With comics he writes through images, the words of his stories never quite reaching the same level. His prose pieces, including interviews, always contain a much more vivid glimpse into the mechanics behind the art. He does not disappoint here, these paragraphs alone will be a purchasing point for any true Pope fan.

Image has done a poor job packaging the pages of this book. The cover is a thin glossy card stock that does an adequate job of supporting the inner pages, yet it is easily bent or creased. The book is bound so tightly with glue that each page ripples towards the spine. Truthfully, there is no comfortable way to open this book completely to enjoy it, for fear you may damage it. Overall the presentation is nice, pages are divided up with art or prose, pacing is well organized, etc, and these things do not reflect the poor packaging on Image's behalf.

There is plenty of space in this book for sketches and signatures. It lends itself nicely as a collectible for hardcore fans. Those who simply enjoyed Battling Boy, and who may not be Pope fans per-say, will find that this book is overpriced. It simply does not convey the person Pope is and underwhelmingly represents Battling Boy.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Great Art, Bad Binding 18. Juni 2014
Von Marty VanDyke - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Paul Pope is one of my favorite artists and I looked forward to this book with a fever. Received my order only to find the inner pages completely wavy against the spine due poor binding. Contacted Amazon and requested a replacement and they sent me second copy. The replacement book also suffered from poor binding. Could not get through the book without forcing the pages open and they would not lay flat. Again the art in the book is sensational. Nice detail shots and full spreads, a real treat to see these collected pages and read his thoughts and inspiration on creating Battling Boy. I feel the publish let not only Mr Pope down but any of his fans who purchase this book. Has a long time admirer of his work, it is sad to see what is a great collection be tarnished over poor quality control from the publisher. Thank you Mr. Pope for putting this book together, thanks Amazon for the great customer service... to the Publisher, Image Comics, if this review is news to you please order a few copies from here and check out the bindings of the received copies, this book deserves better. Fingers crossed for a second printing!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Pope Fans, You will Enjoy 17. April 2014

If you are a fan of behind the scenes artwork, go for it. It was great to see how Paul Pope uses his brush and ink up close and personal, uninterrupted by all of the other steps in editing comic art. Also included throughout the book is an interview with Pope about the creation and themes in Battling Boy.
