Robert Jordans Bestsellerzyklus Das Rad der Zeit ist einer der populärsten Fantasy-Zyklen aller Zeiten, und das aus gutem Grund. Jordans Welt ist prachtvoll und komplex, er hat eine einnehmende und anziehende Gruppe von Charakteren geschaffen und gleichzeitig eine ehrgeizige und fesselnde, alles umspannende Geschichte erdacht. Allerdings tritt der Zyklus mit dem vorigen Band Crown of Swords und jetzt mit Path of Daggers ein wenig auf der Stelle. Der neue Band behält die schleppende Gangart der aktuellen Handlungslinie bei: Rand steht immer noch vor dem Abgrund. Er jongliert mit den politischen Maschinerien um ihn herum und zieht erneut gegen die Seanchan ins Feld. Mit dem Rest der Gruppe um Rand aus dem Gebiet der Zwei Flüsse und ihren Freunden passiert auch nicht viel. Egwene versucht weiter, ihren Status als "wahre" Amyrlin zu stärken (sie nähert sich langsam Tor Valon und der unausweichlichen Konfrontation mit Elaida), und Nynaeve und Elayne wandern weiter in Richtung des Löwenthrons, erneut auf der Flucht vor den Seanchan. Mat Cauthon wird kaum erwähnt und Perrin, wie Mat ein Ta'veren, ist damit beschäftigt, in Ghealdan Politik zu machen. Das Ende verspricht jedoch, daß Band neun wieder an das Tempo und die Leidenschaft der vorigen Bände anknüpfen wird. Wenn Sie bereits "abhängig" sind, könnten Sie wahrscheinlich eher irgendwelche Zwangshandlungen unterdrücken, als Path of Daggers nicht zu lesen. Als Neuling im Rad der Zeit empfiehlt es sich allerdings mit Eye of the World anzufangen, dem fesselnderen ersten Band, der sich zudem durch ein besseres Erzähltempo auszeichnet. --Paul Hughes

Robert Jordan's bestselling Wheel of Time epic is one of the most popular fantasy series of all time for a reason. Jordan's world is rich and complex, and he's assembled an endearing, involving core of characters while mapping out an ambitious and engaging story arc.
But with the previous book, Crown of Swords, and now with Path of Daggers, the series is in a bit of a holding pattern. Path continues the halting gait of the current plot line: Rand is still on the brink of losing it, all the while juggling the political machinations around him and again taking to the field against the Seanchan. The rest of the Two Rivers kids and company don't seem to be moving much faster. Egwene continues to slowly consolidate her hold as the "true" Amyrlin (finally getting closer to Tar Valon and the inevitable confrontation with Elaida), and Nynaeve and Elayne keep on wandering toward the Lion Throne, again on the run from the Seanchan. Mat Cauthon is barely mentioned and fellow ta'veren Perrin keeps busy with politics in Ghealdan. The ending does provide promise, though, that book nine might match the pace and passion of the previous books.
If you're already hooked, you could sooner overcome a Weave of Compulsion than avoid picking up a copy of Path of Daggers. Listen, I'll read a cereal box if there is nothing else around, but I didn't even finish this novel. I read the earlier books while waiting for Goodkind's next work, and steadily began to regret not taking up TV.
Mr. Jordan: I DO NOT NEED TO KNOW EVERY LEAF THAT FALLS FROM THE TREES. The pacing of these books is MISERABLE. For the LOVE OF GOD SPEED IT UP. I swear to GOD in Crown of Swords NOTHING HAPPENED. I'd invite Mr. Jordan to review the 3 act structure just incase he has become lost in describing to us the rustling sound mice make when they walk across the broken dried leaves of falls past.

Thank goodness the Bowl of Winds thing is over. The Bowl of Winds storyline really began to show how poor this series was becoming. Come on - the world is turning arrid and hot because of the influences of evil? I haven't seen or read THAT one in a thousand different books and movies and it just seemed to come out of nowhere. Does anybody remember what a Myrdraal looks like? Barely a peep out of one for three or four books now. I loved the first two books in this series, even though in a broad sense they were predictable. The third was a dozer (was that where they introduced the dopey "Bubbles of evil" nonsense), then after reading the fourth, I thought, "WOW!" The way the history of the Aiel was revealed took my breath away. Somewhere early in Book 5 I realized that things were going wrong. The plot wasn't moving. I feared a return to the pacing of Book 3. We should be so lucky. The series has turned even worse. Jordan either has lost interest or lost the magic touch. Either way, the series is doomed. Put simply, Jordan simply CAN'T come up with better material in this series. I think he emptied his imagination into the first four books and now has nothing left to offer.
I believe someone compared this series to the Iliad. Homer knew when to quit. Jordan doesn't. There's less low-quality filler in a cheap hotdog.

To everyone that has given this book over three stars: you're a bunch of bandwagon morons. This book fails on almost every literary level. The story moves nowhere, the characters are static and whiny (and I mean they ALL whine), and repetitive themes abound. Case in point:
Rand: "Man I wish I knew how to handle women, I don't know how Matt and Perrin do it."
Perrin: "Gee, I can't figure women out. How do Rand and Matt do it?"
Matt: "God women annoy the hell out of me! What is it that Rand and Perrin do that I don't?"
...Or some very close derivative. Unless I'm slightly mistaken, this happens in EVERY book by each character, that is if the character is mentioned ever, specifically Matt. This equals no character development. Again I say, for epic fantasy read Martin which is, instead of mind-numbing, mind-blowing. Best...ever...period.

Great continuation
