If you read one of those pieces a night, it will last you for 14 weeks. You may not want to read more than one or two a night, because the punning, though very witty, is somewhat relentless. She is a feisty lady, and fires on all cylinders. She is devoted to her family: husband, children, and (hilariously but affectionately portrayed) mother. There is towards the end a moving piece about the death of her much-loved husband, Jack Rosenthal, followed soon after by a rather indiscreet one about `A Year of Living Dangerously'.
I liked best the first 70 or so pieces: they are the funniest, are mostly about ordinary everyday life and Maureen's reactions to it. The humour is still there, though not so dominant, in many of the remainder, most of which are about British plays, shows, musicals and TV programmes she has been in and about her fellow actors. This will interest some people more than it did me, and they will obviously and rightly give the book more than the three stars which reflect my personal enjoyment of the book.
