"A former Marine fighter pilot battling to help his young son recover from burns suffered in the accident that killed his wife finds new life when he meets a beautiful new surgeon. This is the kind of book every reader hopes to find: full of wonderful characters, exciting passion and tender love. A joy, indeed." –RT Book Reviews

Dedicated burn surgeon Kate Sinclair shields her tender heart behind a white coat and a coolly professional manner. But something about the little patient the nurses dub “Iron Man” and his vital flyboy father challenges her as a doctor and a woman.

Since the car crash that killed his wife and almost took his son, pilot Patrick MacNeill’s life has revolved around his little boy. No one—no woman and certainly no interfering doctor—can intrude on their bond, forged in love and pain.

When little Jack’s care brings these two together, it ignites a passion they can’t ignore. But their growing involvement threatens Patrick’s emotional barriers and Kate’s professional future. With so much at stake, will she trust her judgment...or her heart?

He rested one hand on the wall above her, close enough for her to feel the warmth emanating from his body, close enough for his breath to touch her face. She saw his eyes, with their thick, short lashes, his pupils nearly swallowing the blazing blue. Her stomach squeezed into her chest, crowding her lungs. She couldn’t breathe. She felt the warmth of his arm, close by her head. She heard her blood thundering in her ears, and the rasp of his quickly indrawn breath.

He kissed her.

It was over before she could say if she liked it, before she had time to react. He lifted his head, and she felt the absence of his mouth more keenly than she had felt its pressure a moment before.

She lifted her chin. She had to, to meet his gaze. “Well, what?”

His firm, well-shaped lips curved at the corners. “Are you going to object?”

She dug deep for a cool response, her hands pressed flat to the wall behind her. He was probably the most vital, potent man she’d ever met, and she was merely unattractive Katie Sue Sinclair, too smart for her own good and stupid with men. She couldn’t let him see how he got to her, how she was affected by his nearness. He would eat her alive.

Maybe she wanted him to.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Lovely love story 23. Januar 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Was this a love story? Yes, but I think the title is a little bit misleading :) In a nutshell, a surgeon and a widower with a son have to shed issues of the past to find each other.
It's a story about givers and takers, and about people who concentrate obsessively on one thing or the other in order not to have to deal with/overcome the past.
The narration style is easygoing and fluid, and never gets boring, and despite their slightly less than normal professions, you could identify with the protagonists and their problems and the difficult path to overcome these problems and change their habits and ways of dealing with people.
Overall, I quite liked this book. It may not have been one of those that keep you glued to it and makes you miss your bedtime, but the plot is interesting enough to keep you reading and find out if there is a happy ending or not ;)

5.0 von 5 Sternen this book got me hooked on Virginia Kantra 29. Juli 2013
Von Mary Vanslyck - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the first book By Virginia Kantra that I read after I met her at a Romantic Times conference in Toronto. I have been hooked on her books ever since. The story takes place in a hospital burn unit, where the hero and heroine meet. She is the Doctor and he is the protective father of a burned son.I have read every Kantra since and enjoyed them all, but this is a top pick and one I reread. It is enjoyable romance with believable characters.Try her books and you too will be hooked.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Too much anguish. (Contains Mild Spoilers) 13. Juni 2014

The premise of the story was interesting, and the prologue was quite promising. A typical romance where both the heroine and hero have to overcome their traumatic past in order to learn to love again. Fine.
We see the two interacting over and over in the first few chapters, but never really spend any time together until the drive home from lunch in Chapter 7, after the five hour "lunch" was completely glossed over. This is followed by many chapters of the two coming together, pushing apart, (repeat over and over and over). The coming together nearly all physical, the pushing apart rather mean-spirited lashing out, to be honest. I'm not sure that any man would say she was a "challenge" instead of just calling her a "b**ch". And he wasn't without fault, either.
In other words, I just didn't see how anything was coming together for these two, and then suddenly, abrupt HEA ending at 92%! What did this happen?!?!?!
The secondary story of Kate's tenuous job at the hospital was also interesting, but concluded weakly. I would have liked this part of the story built up more to round out Kate's character.

That's my overall impression of the story.
Also, there were quite a few typos - enough to be distracting, but not annoying. The nice, but slightly cheesy, professional-looking cover had me thinking this was a published book, but the typos were indicative of self-publishing or a very, very bad proofreader.
Despite one of the one-star reviews, the sex in the book was quite mild. In fact, the use of euphemisms made for very confusing reading and honestly, I couldn't follow the action at all. I just didn't get it.

And of course, my review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the military issue...I do not believe there are any commissioned Marine officers, especially Naval Aviators (USMC pilots are Naval Aviators), that did not attend at least two years of college. At least in recent times - and this book mentions cell phones so we're talking at least in the 90's or 2000's. I believe even LDO's and Warrant Officers (not pilots) have to get degrees these days. This is not an important issue because it does not affect the timeline or anything at all, but just annoys me.

I would not recommend this book.

This is the first I've read by this author. However, am just now reviewing after having read the stories of all three brothers. In addition, followed with Carolina series. Obviously this author appeals to me. She writes a good story with well developed and likable characters. This particular story deals with a fathers devotion to his son. It has depth, romance and a good ending. This reader definitely recommends books by this author.

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of my FAVs of all time!! 28. Mai 2014

A strong, Alpha hero with an equally strong heroine passionately working together to help the hero’s young son, who has been seriously burned in an auto accident. Kate is a driven surgeon who doesn’t have time for love and Patrick’s sole focus is his son, but in the course of caring for the boy’s injuries, they come together to find a life and love with each other.

Based on a true story, “The Passion of Patrick MacNeill” was my introduction to Virginia Kantra’s books and to this day, remains one of my favorite books of all time. I can’t count the number of times I’ve re-read this story!! Virginia has a tremendous gift writing relationships and family dynamics – she always pulls me into the story with lush, believable characters and powerful, intense feelings. And, honestly, if you don’t have a lump in your throat and/or tears in your eyes at the prologue of this book, you have NO soul!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Just about perfect 26. April 2013

This is a great romance. Kate is a doctor in a burn ward, and Patrick's son was burned in a car accident. The hero is s big alpha male, but his passion is making things better for his son. Kate finds it hard to resist his sexiness, but as a new doctor she worries that getting involved with Patrick will blur the lines between doctor /patient and her private life. I loved it when it first came out and it makes a great Kindle read.
