When Rome transgresses upon his father's domain that lays between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Pacorus, a prince of the Parthian Empire, is sent to exact revenge. After a string of victories Pacorus and his men are captured in Cappadocia, clapped in chains and sent to Italy to live out the rest of their days as slaves. But fate intervenes and Pacorus and his companions are saved from a living hell by a renegade gladiator named Spartacus. In gratitude, Pacorus agrees to help Spartacus build his army as Rome musters its legions to crush the slave uprising. And so begins an epic adventure of glory and savagery played out across the length and breadth of Italy, as Spartacus defeats the armies of Rome and Pacorus leads his horsemen to victory after victory. But will Pacorous and the slave army escape from Italy, and will he win the love of the fierce and proud Gallia before the most powerful man in Rome, Marcus Licinius Crassus, takes the field against Spartacus?

A map of the Parthian Empire at the time of Pacorus (the 1st Century BC) can be found on the maps page of my website:

"Darman has researched this novel extremely well, as one would expect with his military non-fiction background. This detail is meshed with great story telling which flows along with great gusto. Less for the fact that this book is about a Parthian rather than a Roman, I would describe it as a ‘Roman Sharpe’. Darman’s style is similar to and as good as Bernard Cornwell’s, one of my favourite authors."

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good story, despite poor editing! 31. August 2011

It's a strong story, set in a historical setting that is soundly researched and beautifully described; especially the minor details regarding countryside, military equipment, clothing, etc. Battle scenes are stirringly presented with all the action followers of the 'historical military fiction' genre could possibly want.
The central character here is a good one, a prince set amongst a slave revolt & forced to come to terms with treating 'these people' as equals. His inner turmoil in this respect is extremely interesting. Indeed most of the central characters are well presented, showing strength, resolve, but with all kinds of human frailties in their personas.
The Spartacus slave rebellion is sparsely recorded by historians, probably because the victors (who wrote the history) came out of this episode with little, or no glory. However, the story follows the known course of events faithfully & I found the narrative credible.
    A great read, highly recommended!
    So... why not 5 stars?
The same old problem that I have experienced in most of my Kindle books; lousy editing! Surely the authors used proof-readers somewhere down the line; in which case there must be a strong case for a legal suit against these morons. The whole book is littered with spelling mistakes and typos. It is a testament to the quality of the story, and the authors writing skills, that I persevered to the end of the book. I sincerely hope that this issue of poor editing, typos, etc. in Kindle presentations is being addressed generally (come on Amazon, you should be pushing for this!) somewhere because my whole kindle experience is being ruined bacause of it.

A good story but unedited. Amazon should be ashamed for charging money for such a poorly written book! The grammar and spelling are atrocious! From now on I will try a sample before ordering a Kindle book.

    5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent 21. Juni 2011

I really enjoyed The Parthian by Peter Darman. I love historical action-epics and this is a rip-roaring adventure, with a cast of well-drawn characters and a sweeping story that draws you in and makes you want to find out what happens next. Its the story of Pacorus, Prince of Parthia, and his ongoing war with the Roman Empire. There are plenty of well-executed battle sequences, convincing dialogue and characters, a plot that moves on very quickly and an astonishing wealth of fascinating detail about life - and especially warfare - in the Ancient World. As I was reading it, I was thinking that this would make a fantastic TV mini-series. Really hope there will be more where this came from. Highly recommended.

    3.0 von 5 Sternen English? 23. November 2011
Von Jim Schwebach - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I enjoy historical fiction in all of its forms and by all(well, most) of its authors. This story is as enjoyable as any others of this genre. I agree with other reviewers that the characters are a trace overblown but this is historical hero fiction and it is true to form.

    So great story, terrible book.

Why terrible? Well, I'm assuming that the original was written in English and the hard copy version was edited by someone who also spoke english and the typesetters, human or mechanical, were familiar with the language. So the paper books di not refree tio the "men fo Parthia" or contain words or phrases such as "fkanked" or "perimeter edge with red." The Kindle for Mac version does. At least once per chapter. In palces, it read like a set of instructions, for a child's playset, made in China with instructions written by a person, who understood but didn't speak, English, but did have lots of commas laying around, unused, and edited by someone or something that also had limited English skills, including structure sentence limited. I'd gladly pay a little more for a product quality checked by real live PROFIICIENT in English, human proofreaders and/or editors. But then proper English in both spelling and structure is something one assumes when purchasing a product presented in this language.

Buyer beware. Read the first page of the book in the Look Inside feature. Much to regret fo mine, I did not,?.!,,,,.

    2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing 2. August 2011

I bought this book based upon the reviews (......Darman's style is similar to and as good as Bernard Cornwell's) (Highly recommended). Being a fan of historical epics, I have almost all Bernard Cromwell books, Simon Scarrow books, Sam Barone, etc.,. Darman style is nowhere as good as Cornwell's or any of the others. Dialogue is boring, characters border science-fiction capabilities (cavalry officers armorless beating battle-hardened roman centurions.....), romantic and prude characters in a period of open and liberal mores... - really??? My first and last book by Darman... -
