What's the difference between playing with paper dolls and watching Jessie Carty play with paper dolls? Insight and art. Paper dolls are rudimentary sketches of little girl dreams (dreams that sometimes involve a future marriage to Shaun Cassidy ... just saying), play time manifestations of the child's view of the big world. Jessie's version of this game raises the stakes and gives eloquent voice to what the child can only guess at. In While Mom Watched Bewitched, Jessie tells of playing with a two-sided puppet doll, Red Riding Hood and the Wolf: "I ask them what kind of pie they'd make for Red/and I. The Wolf growls, 'Mince meat!' Grandma/pleads for apple a la mode." This is rich stuff and, like a fine mince or apple pie, it needs to be savored in small bites, delighted upon, and revisited again and again. Jessie's poems are woven well enough to withstand a reader's curious teasing out the threads and they read individually as well as they read collectively. I can't wait to see what Jessie does next. I hope it involves Colorforms. ;-)

Discovering your parents aren't perfect is the childhood equivalent to losing one's religion - yet Jessie Carty handles such a realization with a profound grace laced with (somehow) maintained innocence in this brilliant first book from a poet who might best be described as the Princess of Tides. Written from the perspective of a young woman, but with such a universal voice that I, as a gay man, can recall my own coming of age, Paper House is like reading the diary of a survivor from childhood through early adulthood. If Judy Blume and Pat Conroy had a lovechild, this is the collection of poetry she'd create.
This isn't lofty poetry that alienates the reader. This is poetry that welcomes us into a house with a shaky foundation, a house we've all been in at one time or another. This is Americana at it's beautiful, ugly truth. This is ten thousand small towns. This is a million childhoods. Above all, this is damn good writing from a poet who is deserving of awards and recognition.
