The Paper Dolls should have been more successful. They began well with Something here in my heart - but their marketing people were too successful at keeping them busy with things that really didn't matter. According to the notes, the follow-up single was to have been Build me up buttercup and a backing track was prepared, but the ladies didn't turn up as required. Obviously, there was a mix-up somewhere and nobody will ever know the truth.
They never recorded that song - it was given to the Foundations and became a monster hit for them. After that, the Paper Dolls recorded an album and more singles, but their record producer never forgave them for the earlier mix-up so there were no more hits.
This CD contains everything the Paper Dolls recorded for Pye, including two versions of Something here in my heart. Despite all the problems, there are some fine covers of Darlin' (Beach Boys), Simon says (1910 Fruitgum Company), Captain of your ship (Reparata), Move over darling (Doris Day), Do you know the way to San Jose (Dionne Warwick) and Step inside love (Cilla Black), together with some good originals.
They changed labels to no avail - the momentum had been lost. What this collection shows is they were extremely talented and, had they been given a fair chance, they might have had several hits. Although not essential, this is an interesting addition to any collection of sixties music and should get those toes tapping - and don't worry about that gaudy cover.
