Genuinely Inspiring

I read this book knowing little about it (it was lent to me by a friend,) and I was delightfully surprised by its tenderness and poignancy. It's almost a fairy-tale. A blind artist is spiritually rescued by the unlikely friendship of generous-spirited little girl living next to him. The characters are complex and believable; the writing style is lucid and lyrical, and when the artist is finally awakened by love, I found myself deeply moved. A lovely parable concerning the power of the heart. I know that as I summarize the book here, it sounds corny, but this short novel is an unexpected gem.

Simple moving story...Quick easy read

This was a very nice book. The kind of book that makes you laugh and smile. While my heart went out to Jonathan for the hand that life dealt him with losing his sight, he still made me laugh, even when he wasn't trying to. I understood the reasons he was so bitter but also knew that he had to get past these things to really be happy.
That's where Lupe comes in. She brings the light back into his world, slowly and carefully but she does succeed. Lupe was too smart for an eleven year old but her maturity made lots of sense as the book went on. The interaction between Lupe and Jonathan was beautiful.
The only thing that I did not like was the end. It seemed to just end without explaining some things that were happening. It felt like there was a chapter or two missing. This did not take away from the beauty of the story though, it just irritated me. The book is very simply written and can be read by an older child to an adult.

Beautifully Written Book With a Timeless Message

I have long been a fan of both Louise Hay and Lynn Lauber, so I was thrilled to find a book with both authors listed. The book was beautifully written and genuine. I tend to shy away from short works, but this book was just right - it kept me engaged and while it was quite short, it was complete. I hope this partnership continues - what a pleasure to see a partnership between two strong, independent women!
