PHP and MySQL Web Development introduces readers (who are assumed to have little or no experience with the title subjects) to PHP and MySQL for the purpose of creating dynamic Internet sites. It teaches the same skills as introductory Active Server Pages (ASP) and ColdFusion books--technologies which address the same niche.

Authors Luke Welling and Laura Thomson's technique aims to get readers going on their own projects as soon as possible. They present easily digestible sections on specific technical processes--"Accessing Array Contents" and "Using Encryption with PHP" are two examples. Each section centres on a sample program that strips the task at hand down to its essentials, enabling the reader to fit the process into his or her own solutions as required. Tables that list options and other nuggets of reference material appear as well, but the many examples and the authors' commentary on them take centre stage.

ich habe dieses buch in einem buchgeschaeft nahe der technischen uni erstanden und einen echten gluecksgriff gelandet (war das einzige exemplar).

neben vielen deutschen buechern zu den einzelnen themen PHP und MYSQL, die ich beide beherrschen wollte war es das einzig englische aber erstens sollte man als jemand, der mit computern arbeitet schon soweit ahnung haben und zweitens war es das einzige buch, das die beiden sehr eng verknuepften bereiche PHP und MYSQL in einem buch abdeckt, was wirklich gut gelungen ist.

positive seiten fuer mich an diesem buch:
- fuer anfaenger geeignet, obwohl ein gewisses verstaendnis natuerlich von vorteil
- fuehrt in die wichtigsten konzepte und befehle ein
- viele beispiele, an denen diese demonstriert werden
- perfekte verknuepfung von PHP und MYSQL, da von denselben autoren im selben buch an denselben beispielen erklaert
- anleitung zur installation von apache, php, mysql im buch enthalten (fuer unix _und_ windows)
- alles noetige zur instalation auf cd, gesamter sourcode aus dem buch zum copy pasten
- eigener teil ueber sicherheitsrelevante programmieraspekte
- nicht nur laufend praktische beispiele sondern auch teil, in dem einige typische groessere projekte schritt fuer schritt realisiert werden

achtung, dieses buch ist _keine_ command-reference, falls sie eine gedruckte referenz suchen, finden sie zu PHP und MYSQL viele buecher dieser art. das besondere ist eben die praktische und gut verknuepfte art, wie dieses buch mit diesen themenbereichen umgeht.

das paperback macht das buch angenehm zum durchblaettern (geschmackssache, zuerst war ich auch skeptisch weil das buch doch ziemlich teuer ist dafuer, dass es kein harcover besitzt), wenngleich die cd huelle hinten stoert.

das buch erscheint teuer, jedoch deckt es dafuer die beiden teilgebiete PHP und MYSQL beide gut ab und stellt die verknuepfung zwischen ihnen her. mit zwei seperaten buechern ueber PHP und MYSQL wuerde man auf jeden fall viel teurer kommen und muesste die arbeit, verbindungen herzustellen, ganz alleine machen.

insgesamt bin ich wirklich zufrieden mit diesem kauf und werde versuchen, weitere buecher dieser autoren zu finden, in der hoffnung, dass diese auch so gut gelungen sind.

After reading the book you have quite a commmand of php and mysql and it definitely is easy to read. However its rather tedious to read about arrays, functions, oop or database concepts when you are familiar with all these concepts and only want to know, how these issues look in php, mysql and what common pitfalls or commonly used ways to to things are. So I personally think that it's way to thick but nevertheless very useful if you're new to mysql and php.

This book is targeted at the reader who has some elementary programming knowledge and intermediate HTML skills, due to the terminology used and the examples given. The book is best utilized by someone who really wants to learn the subjects covered, PHP and MySQL. This is one of those books that you should read from cover-to-cover. It's not a command reference, but you get real-world examples of how the commands work together, which in itself is something that most reference books do not offer. The chapters are smartly laid out in a way that makes the reader feel a sense of accomplishment after completing each chapter, and that encourages the reader to continue. Welling and Thomson take a very unique classroom-style approach to teaching the reader how to accomplish different tasks with PHP and MySQL. They start off with the basics and work their way up to more complicated tasks. At no point did I feel lost, because every new page builds upon the precepts learned on previous pages. This is a big book, and will probably take some time to read from cover to cover, but there is very little "fluff". Every page has something important to teach. There was only one typo that I caught in this entire book. It's on page 21. Overall, this book has astounded me. When I ordered this book, I had some practice playing with PHP, but I knew almost nothing about MySQL. Now I can program shopping carts and interactive web forums, and so on. The great thing about PHP and MySQL together is that they are so flexible. They can be used together to do just about anything you want. The sky's the limit. This book gives you the healthy start you need to writing your own code. It is very well written and should be in the hands of any beginning PHP and MySQL programmer. My compliments go to the Authors, editors and to SAMS press for yet another great volume.
