I bought this book because I needed to know the most important events of British history for my final exams at university. The book starts from the very beginning with the Ice Age many thousand years ago. It then explains how the first men came to Britain, gives an insight into Celtic and Roman life, carries on through the middle ages and ends in the 21st century with its final chapter. Kings, queens, battles, politics and plottings take the major part in the book but there are also many digressions where the daily life of the country folk and of people in the towns and cities is explained. Great inventions, tragedies and changes that had a great influenced on everyday life are also mentioned and enmeshed in the events which are always vividly described.
I chose this book because the text is not too hard to understand (especially for non-native speakers) and divided in smaller chapters of about 10 to 15 pages. It should be quite understandable for an intermediate student of English. Also very good: Many beautiful illustrations (over 500 of them) and many detailed historical maps provide additional information which help to find out where exactly the events took place.
Thus I can recommend this book for anybody who is interested in British and Irish history and who doesn't just want hundreds of pages of plain text. The information given in the book is sufficient for a fantastic overview but not too detailed to be boring.
The book has 416 pages (index included). In the back you can also find the English royal line of succession until today as well as an overview of all Scottish kings and queens.

A very interesting book, the pictures are beautiful, the texts are easy to read even for foreigners with an intermediate/hight intermediate level in English.
