If you want to understand how doctors are taught to think - how so many, how most of them do think - read the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine. It's oddly and deeply moving Now in its eighth edition, it still bulges in the pockets or on the iPhone of every scared house doctor on his or her first night on the ward, giving comfort and reassurance. Not just about what to do or how to do it, but about human compassion. The Week, July 2012 This is a very useful reference book which answers a direct question that a clinician has about general medicine, usually with a patient in mind...the book has to be readable, straight to the point, no waffling, up to date and comprehensive. That is a big ask for a handbook smaller in size than the BNF and roughly the same thickness. Yet astonishingly, it measures up to all these demands and more. It is an excellent reference source, ideal for the desktop for a GP or outpatient clinic and is reasonably mobile. Its layout lends itself very easily to be quickly dipped in; information extracted and move on to deal with the patient and solve their problem. The language is accessible, scholarly yet easy to read and practical and the scope of coverage is amazing, considering the size of the book. This book remains the gold standard for a fantastic handbook of medicine and remains like its predecessors, truly outstanding. Highly recommended. Univadis All medical students should own an OHCM...the best tutor you'll ever have. Oxford Medical School Gazette ...a truly indispensable medical gem. Occupational Medicine ...it has not lost any of its fantastic attributes and still remains a top class book...The language is accessible, scholarly yet easy to read and practical and the scope of coverage is amazing, considering the size of the book. Dr Harry Brown This handbook is one I wish I were able to author. It is clearly one of the best with its accurate and comprehensive fund of knowledge and its emphasis on the human aspect, written by compassionate educators. I highly recommend it to all clinicians on both sides of the Atlantic. Vincent F Carr Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences ...well formatted and beautifully presented...what impresses me most...is the attention given arguably to the most agonising and difficult matters in medicine. These are ethical and philosophical ideals...a truly indispensable medical gem. Every doctor should have ready access to this small volume. The Society of Occupational Medicine Even the latest resuscitation coun-cil guidelines made it into this edition, which is impressive seeing as most medical texts are already out of date by the time they are published. What I really love about the OHCM is the intermittent sections of in-telligent prose, reminding us that medicine is not just black and white (or maybe cheese and on-ion). These give us new perspectives on tricky or mundane topics, with inspiration gleaned from disciplines such as mythology, art, poetry, cosmology and philosophy. These sections supplement our education and encourage us to become more holistic in our clinical reasoning, and is quite unique within the general medical text-book market.

HASH(0x936bd06c) von 5 Sternen Far Superior than other small Medicine books 30. Juni 2013

As a practicing physician in US, I am deeply impressed with content and thoroughness of Oxford handbook of Clinical Medicine. In a way, it also helped me understand key differences in understanding of clinical medicine between health care providers in USA and UK. The US health system is heavily dependent on lab tests and Radiology which tremendously increases the cost of health care and some times results in harm to the patients because of exposure to radiation and side effects of not so necessary medications. This is also reflected in most of the pocket or hand carry medicine books available in US where students and resident physicians are encouraged to practice medicine following various algorithms. Though the idea of this approach is to create more clarity in the minds of the students and help them avoid delay in taking necessary steps in management of patients. However in the practical life, when faced with complex decision making situations or fear of malpractice, this supposed clarity does not work. In contrast to this, in UK, as this book reflects, there is heavy emphasis on clinical symptoms, signs, and skills. Comparing this book with leading books in US such as Washington Manual or Pocket Medicine by Mass. General Hospital clearly show that this book is far superior than others in many areas including pathophysiology, clinical details, clarity of contents, photographs and pictures. The details in the book are easy to remember and are not confusing. One early reviewer has included presence of rare syndrome mentioning in the book as the "cons" of the book. Actually, this is a big " pros" of the book as it helps you think outside the box when things do not fit in to every day clinical observation. I would suggest the authors and publishers to keep it in next editions and possibly expand it. I highly recommend this book to all practising internal medicine physicians in US. This will strengthen their clinical knowledge and off course while managing patients, these physicians will have opportunity to study comparative disease management practices in UK. The only down side of the book is that it is available only in print format. I hope the publishers will have this available to us in Kindell edition as well in future.

I am a nursing student and an owner of numerous pocket books about drugs, being an RN, etc. and this Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is the most COMPREHENSIVE and USEFUL books I have encountered.

Pros:
- Captures the major/significant details about common pathologies
- Very comprehensive in terms of the various pathologies, treatments, signs and symptoms etc.
- "Emergency-section": on the last few pages, it gives you the algorithms for medical emergencies like ACS, PE, anaphylactic shock, etc.
- It is the size of 5x8 photo (so a little bigger than your average size 4x6 photo), so it's very easy to carry!
- Some pathologies contain useful pictures whether it be an X-Ray, a skin lesion, CT scan etc.
- Four page markers for easy bookmarking

Cons:
- I personally did not find the four bookmarkers very useful. They were more "in the way". But that's just my opinion!

This clinical pocket guide gives you a comprehensive, detailed snapshot (what an oxymoron...) of the different patient presentations a health care professional would encounter. In no ways would this replace your 2000+ page text books, but it is definitely useful to trigger some key points about diseases, syndromes, etc.

HIGHLY recommended

HASH(0x936bd27c) von 5 Sternen Excellent for UK house officers, US medical students sbroad and more 4. August 2015

When I bought this I was an American Medical Student working in Stockport, UK under the NHS. If you are a medical student from the US you need this book! It not only gives you proper levels in European metrics. It gives almost every commonly encountered medical condition, signs, symptoms and treatments. In addition there are great details on different medical procedures including chest tubes, inserting IV, intubation, and even delivering a child.

The book is also perfectly sized to slip into a white coat pocket (or the pocket of a pair of trousers) if you are on the go. Honestly the Oxford Clinical Handbook has been one of my favorite books to keep on me for the shear scope of information presented in such a compact place.

Lastly, this book has a storytelling element to it which is so unlike US medical books. They tell stories, give medical anecdotes and a real sense of the world at large. I would recommend this book to anyone in medicine and even let students read over it to get a better perspective of medicine.

If you wish to practise the science and art of medicine than this is the book. Have read this book a zillion times and still continue to read it, and every time I learn something new. It was my companion and first port of call on those long On call nights as an House officer, Senior House officer, and subsequently as a Registrar in internal medicine, and I am glad it never failed me. I think every one who has been trained in United kingdom, and on the subcontinent will vouch for this little piece of Gem.
My only Grudge is that when it initially started, there used to be blank page available opposite to the topic in question where one could jot down his or her own extra bits. By the end of med school one would have created a mine full of info on each page of this classic. Hence my third edition still sits on my desk for it has more info than many Internal Medicine books put together.

This book is refered to in class study often so it's wise to buy a copy, not only for now but for later in practice for referral. The pictures and illustrations are very clear and sharp. Packed with information. Has multiple colored silk bookmarks (corresponding to the colored sections).

There is also a mini edition that is perfect for carrying on rounds. Just make sure you either have great eyes or a pocket magnifier. All of the info is in it, not abridged and those pics and illustarations are just as clear as in this full-sized
