Orphaned when his trapper parents failed to come back from the forest one day, young Darian is resentful when apprenticed to the damaged magician Justyn. He sees little point in the few tricks he manages to learn, and what has magic done for Justyn save leave him under-employed, sick and despised in a remote village? Then half-human invaders take the town and Justyn dies heroically helping people escape while Darian looks on in horror. Lost in the forest, Darian is rescued and recruited by the mysterious corps of Hawkbrothers... This is both a decent account of a difficult and disturbed boy coming to terms with his past and his future and a glance at new aspects of the world of the Heralds of Valdemar Mercedes Lackey has created in her other fantasy novels. Too often epic fantasy neglects the consequences of magical warfare for the peasants on the ground--the villagers' bad treatment of Darian and Justyn is a result of the necessary shattering of magic in earlier books, and Justyn is a brain-damaged veteran of those wars:
"But, like a lover scorned, his magic has left him as well. Much of what he had learned, the blow to the head had driven from his memory; he had trouble seeing mage-energies with any reliability, and the mind-magic he had was so seriously weakened he could no longer lift anything larger than a needle for more than a few moments".
This is a chastening and perceptive book about growing up and coming to realise that the people around you have reasons for being wrong. --Roz Kaveney -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Kirkus Reviews

Stand-alone Valdemar yarn from the wife-and-husband team (The Silver Gryphon, 1996, etc.). Chronologically, this follows the events of Storm Breaking (not reviewed), but it's otherwise unconnected. Young orphan Darian lives on the edge of the vast Pelagiris forest. Though apprenticed to the wise old wizard Justyn, he's contemptuous of magic in general and unwilling to make the effort to develop his own talents. When invading barbarians burn the village and kill Justyn, Darian flees into the forest and meets the Hawkbrothers, a magical elflike race who bond with birds and bear such names as Snowfire, Starfall, and Nightwind. What ensues is a standard coming-of-age fantasy involving the usual Lackey and Dixon suspects (yes, of course, gryphons). Should entertain the more junior and unsuspecting sections of the audience. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. I loved this book. I am a major Mercedes Lackey fan and have read most of her books. I first started reading them when I saw one (The Lark and the Wren) on my sister's book shelf and from then on I was hooked. This book was much better than I expected. Her last trilogy The Mage Storms wasn't that great so I wasn't sure about this one untill I started reading and was snagged. I can't wait to read the next books Owlsight and Owlknight. Other books of hers that are cool are The Last Herald-Mage trilogy. I have read those books over and over. Her Bardic Voices and Bardic Choices books were good too, except for the last one Four and Twenty Blackbirds. I hope she keeps on writing her Valdemar books after this trilogy since I love them so much. If you are a Lackey fan you should also check out Tamora Pierce, Terry Goodkind, Robin Mckinley, Sherwood Smith, Andre Norton, Dennis McKiernan, or\and Ursala Le Guin books.

When I first heard that Mercedes Lackey was coming out with a new "Valdemar" novel, I was excited, then after some long contemplation, and reading some of her recent books, I had doubts. I bought it, read it, loved it. Though at the beginning, I couldn't stand Darian, he was such a brat, no wonder the folk of Errolds grove looked down at him. Then when the barbarians came, and invaded Errolds Grove, and Justyn killed himseif trying to save the town, I started to have a little more compassion for Darian.

I won't go into more detail, for there might be readers out there who want to read it, and find out the rest of this wonderful book for themselves. So do yourself a favor, buy this book, and you will be suprised!!!

Okay, theres really not much to say about this book other then well...it was just bad. The characters were one dimentional and annoying and the plot was simple and boring. Somehow I got through it, thinking it had to get better. I was wrong, the second one was even worse and I finally had to just stop not even half way through. I hear that not all of ML's books are this bad, and I'm willing to forgive her this one transgression and accept that as true. Either way, I won't be reading anything else by her.

good, but not near as good as her others
I love Mercedes Lackey books very much, but this series just isn't as good as the others. I've re-read every other book abut 5 times at least, this series I've only read once or... Lesen Sie weiter...

Disappointing
Though I am a big fan of the series, I'm starting to find Lackey's books extremely disappointing and unsatisfying. She's writing stock plots with stock characters. Lesen Sie weiter...

Yet another sign that it's time to give Valdemar a rest.
I've been patient with Mercedes Lackey. I read "The Last Herald-Mage" trilogy and overlooked its flaws---such as her tendency to narrate too much and give the characters... Lesen Sie weiter...

Disappointing, not her usual quality.
Mercedes could have eliminated about 50 pages of Darien's repeated whining and excuses in the beginning and it would have been a 4 star book. Lesen Sie weiter...
