2.0 von 5 Sternen Not my favorite book 17. August 2013
Von hereswhatithink - Veröffentlicht auf
If you're looking for a character study about an outlaw who changes throughout the pages of the book for the better this isn't quite it. I'll admit that that is what I had in mind when I picked it up. However, when we are introduced to Hunter (the outlaw) at the outset, it is on his release from a two year prison sentence for having killed a man in self- defense and he is already a changed man, having changed while on the inside.

So really this book is about whether he can forgive himself and will others be able to look past his past and see the man he has become. On his arrival in town he discovers that he has a 9 year old daughter that he knew nothing about. Thankfully for him she takes to him straight away and thankfully for her he does the same. This was a little unbelievable to my mind but stranger things do happen.

The heroine of the book happens to be the child's aunt (and incidentally the daughter of the town's "madam"). She (the heroine) also takes to Hunter almost immediately and visa versa. And yet, while they so obviously have the hots for each other they still keep second guessing it and getting all insecure. It was frustrating.

Hunter's daughter is 9 but acts younger, I would put her at 5 or 6. The girl Molly who is mentioned in the book is 15 and yet acts about 10 or 11. Not sure what was up with that.

There is a LOT of introspective musing in this book. Both on Hunter's part and the heroine's. (sorry, Ive forgotten her name already but I'm bad with that). This slows the story down. At times I wanted to skim but I forced myself not to.

There is no sex or cussing in this book. There is some violence in the form of an attempted kidnapping/ shooting and a fair bit of talk regarding brothels, prostitutes and madams. For this reason, I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with my daughter reading it.

I can't put my finger on it, I really wanted to like this story but it just didn't do it for me. I never really connected with the characters or cared too much what became of them.

Bottom line: I will read another of Renee's books. She has skill. I'm sure a different topic would interest me, this just wasn't my favorite.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great turn on the "former bad boy discovers he's a father" theme 29. Juni 2013
Von Sis Steele - Veröffentlicht auf
There are plenty of books out there based on secret babies or men who find themselves raising a child of a relative. But Renee Ryan created a wonderfully emotional and satisfying tale of a prodigal son who discovers he is the father of a...nine year old girl. Yes, men with babies have a swoon factor but the way Hunter Mitchell responds to the news and the responsibility made this reader's heart melt. Add a spirited heroine, Annabeth Silks, whose mother runs the local bordello and the ensuing interactions with Madame Mattie Silks, the themes of love, forgiveness, redemption and a returning cast of secondary characters. The pages of The Outlaw's Redemption practically turn on their own. On its own, the book is a lovely, emotional one. In the series, it further explores characters readers have wondered about for a good while now. Just a lovely read.

4.0 von 5 Sternen I really enjoyed this story... 1. Juli 2013

About the book~
Who would guess the most formidable adversary former gunslinger Hunter Mitchell ever faced would be a fiery, violet-eyed female? Now that he's served his time, Hunter intends to claim the daughter he's only just discovered. While the law is on his side this time, his daughter's devoted aunt certainly isn't.

Annabeth Silks can't bear to let a onetime outlaw take little Sarah. As the daughter of an infamous madam, she knows the hardship of an unstable home. But every glimpse of Hunter's reformed character dares Annabeth to look beyond his the family and future she never thought to find.

My Thoughts~
Hunter Mitchell, a former gunslinger fresh out of a two year prison stint, returns to the brothel where he killed a man, intent on retrieving his daughter from Mattie Silks, the brothel's owner. Reformed and longing for a chance to start fresh, he won't allow Annabeth Silks to keep him from the sweet nine-year-old girl he just discovered was his. Annabeth can't bear the thought of losing her niece, but even tougher for her to imagine, is leaving Charity House to live with Hunter as Sarah's nanny, especially when her heart longs for more.

Initially, I passed on this book, non-committal about a reformed outlaw for a hero, but I've read other books by Renee Ryan and liked them, so I scooped it up. I'm glad I did.

What I liked...
I really appreciated the way Hunter treated Mattie, the brothel owner. By treating Mattie with respect and dignity, Hunter sealed the deal with Annabeth's heart.

Relationships are complicated. I liked that the author didn't sugarcoat Annabeth's relationship with her mother. Ryan portrayed their unusual bond realistically, showing the embarrassment, the shame, the stigma. Annabeth loves her mother, but doesn't appreciate being labeled a madam's daughter or the risk of losing her reputation and home. Mattie also loves her daughter but isn't willing to give up the finer things in life for her daughter's sake.

I also admired how the author handled Hunter's past. When he arrives on scene, he's already reformed. Ryan shows us Hunter's commitment to being a better man without being preachy.

What I didn't like so much...
Hunter had actually been married twice, which I found a bit confusing in the beginning and unnecessary.

I really enjoyed this story and getting to know Hunter, Annabeth, and Mattie, all strong characters. Great job, Ms. Ryan!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Rich Read with Romance and a Redeemed Hero 19. August 2013
Von Keli Gwyn - Veröffentlicht auf
A delicious tale of an unlikely couple overcoming obstacles to find true love. Hunter is a Hero with a capital H, who is struggling to overcome an unsavory past he regrets while looking to the Lord to guide his future. He stole my heart from the start with his warmth, kindness, and charm, coupled with his hidden vulnerability. Annabeth is a delightful heroine with a shameful secret and a heart of gold. I had such fun rooting for this couple as I savored this well written story. It's easy to see why the copy I bought bore a "Love Inspired Recommended Read" sticker. It's one of the best Love Inspired Historials I've read, as rich and satisfying as chocolate. Mmm.

I have grown to really like the Love Inspired Historical books. This book is book 6 of a series yet you can easily read it as a stand alone but it might make you want to go back and read the rest of the series. In this book Hunter who had been in jail for killing a man has been released and after receiving a letter saying that he had a daughter that his first wife never told him about he sets out to claim her.

Annabeth is the child's aunt and lovers her like her own so when Hunter shows up to claim the child she fears she may never see her again. Yet Annabeth who had met Hunter years before finds herself attracted to him. Can this outlaw find redemption and love?

What I liked: Annabeth is the secret daughter of a woman who is not held in high regard in the community and she is trying to hold a job and not be found out who she really is. I liked her and she had spunk. I enjoyed the attraction between Hunter and Annabeth and liked how the author wrote the story. The plot was enjoyable and even though part of the storyline has to do with one of the other books in the series I thought the author did a great job giving enough back story to not confuse a reader who had not read the other books.

What I did not like: Took a little time for this book to get interesting. Maybe part of my problem is I have not read any of the other books in the series and that made it harder for me to jump into the book since those who have read the series would most likely know some of the characters from the get go.

Overall this was a good book. I wouldn't mind going back and reading this series from the beginning. It was fine to read it as a stand alone but I think I would have enjoyed it better had I read the ones before it.
