Kurzbeschreibung

Julia Gilliland has always been interested in the natural world around her. She particularly enjoys her outings to the cavern near her father's homestead, where she explores for fossils and formations, and plans to write a book about her discoveries. The cave seems plenty safe--until the day a mysterious intruder steals the rope she uses to find her way out.

Rafe Kincaid has spent years keeping his family's cattle ranch going, all without help from his two younger brothers, who fled the ranch--and Rafe's controlling ways--as soon as they were able. He's haunted by one terrible day at the cave on a far-flung corner of the Kincaid property, a day that changed his life forever. Ready to put the past behind him, he plans to visit the cave one final time. He sure doesn't expect to find a young woman trapped in one of the tunnels--or to be forced to kiss her!

Rafe is more intrigued by Julia than any woman he's ever known, but how can he overlook her fascination with the cave he despises? And when his developing relationship with Julia threatens his chance at reconciliation with his brothers, will he be forced to choose between the family bonds that could restore his trust and the love that could heal his heart?

"Out Of Control" was the first book I have read by Mary Connealy, and will be the last. This book caught my attention because I love historical fiction and am always on the lookout for another good book to get lost in. I stuck with this book until the end, but I had to force myself to do so. The plot was not well thought out and rushed. The entire story takes place within a few days, and has no character development at all. I found that I could not like either of the two main character, Rafe and Julia. Actually, I came to be annoyed by them and the way they were portrayed. Julia was only concerned about her 'fossils', even in times of great peril to her and others. Rafe could only think about how he would claim a new piece of land and make a new home. I feel as though this could have been a great story, but unfortunately, it is not.

I didn't really care about how things turned out for any of these characters. Julia in particular suffers from a severe case of TSTL. For example: "There's a gun-toting madman in this cave. We should be careful and quiet . . . oh, look, Fossils! Fossils! Fossils fossils FOSSILS!!!!!" I suppose she was supposed to be spunky and passionate, but I thought she was a selfish idiot. I finished it because I rarely don't finish books, but I was pretty bored by the whole thing.

I truly wish that authors would stop writing strong women as stupid women but that is the only way to describe Julia. In several scenes the only way to describe her is as too stupid to live. I know multiple people have commented on it but its so true. When you think that someone may want to kill you, and the only thing you have to do is be quiet and stick close to the guy trying to keep you safe, that is what you would do, unless you are Julia. In that case you can only notice fossils, talking loudly and hammer against the wall to make sure that everyone knows you are there. What is sad is that doesn't just happen once in the book. I get that the author wanted to give her a different interest than a lot of heroines but come on, could you also give her a little intelligence to go along with it? I also found the way she treated Seth appalling. Perhaps the author thought she was funny by having the Julia actually comment multiple times to Seth about how crazy he is. I also found it horrible that when its obvious that he is a man in desperate need of help does she give him help and take him home like he obviously needs? Oh no, she gets him to lead her around the caves. Really? The way she acted and spoke made me cringe over and over again. There is no way that Rafe would ever fall for her in the real world. That brings us to the second horrible character in this book.

Rafe is a bully who can't ask anything. He demands and commands everything. He also can't stop kissing Julia. He claims to love her but its obvious from his actions that all he feels is lust. This isn't romance, at least not Christian romance. If you love secular romances where all you need is sex then great, this is a more tepid version where everyone keeps their clothes on but the principle is the same.

I had heard good things about this author and perhaps I should give her another chance but after this book I am not feeling very motivated to do so.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Awful book :-( 16. September 2011

Out of Control by Mary Connealy was an awful book. I really like this author and am surprised that I could dislike this book sooooo much. Julia was a whiny brat whose only concern was about her fossils. She was downright selfish. I realize her father was a lowlife, but this girl needed a timeout in a big way. I have never disliked a character more. I had to force myself to finish this book. Don't waste your money on this book. Read her Montana Marriages series or Sophie's Daughters series. I have read these books many times, I guess all her books cannot be gold - but this book was awful. UGH!!

1.0 von 5 Sternen worst female character ever 16. April 2012

This book was terrible. I am always hesitant to get free kindle books, but this one had a 5 star rating so I thought I'd try it. BIG MISTAKE. The main female character, Julia, was the brattiest little girl I've ever met. When her life is in danger and a man she doesn't even know is trying to save and she just has to sit back and be quiet, but all she can do is babble on and on about fossils like some 5 year old. I also could not understand how Rafe managed to fall in love with her when all I wanted to do was slap her and tell her to shut up. Plus they were both overly bossy control freaks. Also the end leaves it open as to if she continues to be an idiot and risk her life doing stupid things simply because she wants to with no regard to her safety or her husbands and I really don't want to pay to read the second book in the series because if it is this bad I would be super angry, although I liked Audra and Ethan better by far. To sum it up, this book was a huge waste of my time and I had to struggle to finish it. If I want to watch a bratty girl who pouts and whines when she doesn't get her way and doesn't listen to common sense or people telling her no for her own good, then I will just spend time watching my toddler throw a fit.
