Kurzbeschreibung

5. April 1990 Oxford Paperbacks
In 1983, the U.N. General Assembly created the World Commission on Environment and Development, an independent committee of twenty-two members, headed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, the Prime Minister of Norway. Designed to examine global environment and development to the year 2000 and beyond, the commission seeks to reassess critical problems, to formulate realistic proposals for solving them, and to raise the level of understanding and commitment to the issues of environment and development. Rather than presenting a gloom and doom report about the destruction of natural resources, Our Common Future offers an agenda advocating the growth of economies based on policies that do not harm, and can even enhance, the environment. The commission recognizes that the time has come for a marriage of economy and ecology, in order to ensure the growth of human progress through development without bankrupting the resources of future generations.

Pressestimmen

'a remarkably comprehensive guide to environmental concerns around the world. The book is a compact educator.' Garbage 'The ... volume is one of thorough analysis and passionate argument...it contains much lively challenge.' Reconciliation Quarterly 'a bold and important document. What is more, unlike so many prestigious predecessors of this genre, it is highly readable ...Our Common Future should underpin all the current deliberations on the state of the world economy.' Jonathon Porritt, The Diplomat 'The volume is one of thorough analysis and passionate argument ... it contains much lively challenge ... essentially a specialist study which usefully avoids the exaggerations of ideology which have often bedevilled the whole debate on aid.' 'Essential reading for courses on development.' P.J. O'Brien, University of Glasgow 'The most important document of the decade on the future of the world.' The Advertiser, Australia

Synopsis

Most of today's decision makers will be dead before the planet suffers the full consequences of acid rain, global warning, ozone depletion, widespread desertification, and species loss. Most of today's young voters, however, will be alive. In this, perhaps the most important document of the decade on the future of the world, the urgency of changing certain policy decisions, some of which threaten the very survival of the human race, is made abundantly clear. The World Commission on Environment and Development, headed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, Prime Minister of Norway, was set up as an independent body in 1983 by the United Nations. Its brief was to re-examine the critical environment, to develop proposals to solve them, and to ensure that human progress will be sustained through development without bankrupting the resources of future generations. In Our Common Future, the Commission serves notice that the time has come for a marriage of economy and ecology, so that governments and their people can take responsibility not just for environmental damage, but for the policies that cause the damage. It is not too late to change these policies; but, it warns, we must act now.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting, but . . . 12. Dezember 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
While the topic of this text, sustainable development, is interesting, the text is not. The first chapter provides most of what is necessary to understand the commission's findings. The 300+ pages which follow are filled with too many examples, which disrupts the flow of the book.

Informative and Startling!
This is a book that you need to be careful to understand exactly what is being communicated between the lines- because rich and powerful people have been changing laws for years that are affecting all of us. This book has nothing to do with those who are changing the laws it is their insights and desires and accumlative research. You might want to write in a notebook while your reading this book and research the organizations and ideas the book discusses. This would give you a much clearer picture.
Lots of acronyms WHO, IMF, WWF, WMO WRI, So many there is a section in the beginning of the book to help you keep up. A lot of the information seems right and good, very good-
However, even though they have so many suggestive plans for they organizations who are involved, it left me with feeling, "Lord, what can I do to help. The world's in a mess, I want to help?"

I do agree with a lot of the information in this book- for instance, we don't need more weapons in the world- we need more humanity.

However, concerning food production, I don't think that it should be the United Nations responsibility to provide food for the world- this responsibility should fall to ourselves and our education of ourselves to garden more- to learn what is edible on our lands- to grow and cultivate fruit/nut trees and all these sort- But, now a days we have been getting out of school and not even a bit of knowledge of how to care for our needs- only to be able to work for the man or the mammon as some might say. Our agriculture education needs to be enhanced, greatly.

This book talks a lot about sustainable growth and of increasing the GNP of our economies - this would add more taxes to our government.

A wealth of information- you need to read it!

This text was super boring. I HAD to read part of it for a class. I wouldn't waste your time on this book when there are much better ones available on the same subject.
