I'm still trying to figure out what the greatest Jerry Herman score is. My first choice, when I was an up-and-coming fan of musical theater, was La Cage aux Folles. However, even though it may be a touching show if done right, it does not have a particularly great score. The next go-to show was Mack & Mabel. Its score certainly beats La Cage. Robert Preston does very well with "I won't Send Roses", Lisa kirk shines in "Big Time", and even though Bernadette Peters would grow to be an even greater performer in subsequent productions, she is the star of the recording personifying excitement, anger and hurt in, respectively, "Look what Happened to Mabel", "Wherever he ain't" and "Time Heals everything", the first song being the score's highlight for its energy. However, I simply don't buy some of the other songs such as "Movies were Movies", "Hundreds of Girls" and "When Mabel Comes into a Room". To make matters worse, it is hard to find a theatrical or emotional throughline in the show. So, probably this is not the great Herman score. I'll nominate Mame next.
