Die Theorie wird zu Recht als Urknall-Theorie des Bewusstseins bezeichnet. Das Buch ist sehr spannend geschrieben und Jaynes beschreibt das komplexe Thema sehr anschaulich und verständlich.
Ich habe das Buch 1999 gekauft und mich seither unregelmäßig regelmäßig mit den Publikationen zu dieser Theorie beschäftigt. Jaynes hat seine Theorie zuerst als populärwissenschaftliches Buch veröffentlicht anstatt zuerst die Elemente seiner Theorie mit Fachkollegen ausgiebig zu diskutieren. Deshalb wurde er von der Fachwelt in den letzten dreißig Jahren konsequent - nein nicht kritisiert - ingoriert! Außer Daniel Dennet bezieht sich kein bekannter Author auf Ihn (komisch, die anderen Kommentatoren haben alle anonym kommentiert ;-). Dies ist wirklich schade, denn so war die wirklich sehr überzeugende Theorie keiner konstruktiven Kritik ausgesetzt. Zum Glück gibt es jetzt ein neues Buch, das die spährliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Theorie zusammenfaßt: Reflections on the Dawn of Consciousness: Julian Jaynes's Bicameral Mind Theory Revisited.
Wer sich gerne mit einer provokativen, aber überzeugend präsentierten Theorie auseinandersetzt der muß das Buch kaufen. Sie werden das Buch entweder verschlingen, oder ... ignorieren.

If you've ever wondered about why humans act the way they do, read this book!. Professor Jaynes' exploration of the origins of self-referential thought and the true meaning of self-awareness will open new vistas of understanding.
His major premise, that consciousness developed around the time of Homer, is fully supported by his detailed analysis of literature and myths through the time of human development. Most importantly, in my opinion, in understanding current human behavior ( especially our willingness to accept authority figures ) is his premise that pre-conscious humans heard 'voices' telling them how to act and survive...an increase in population and complexity of life gradually caused these 'voices' to fail and humans looked to others for direction.
I cannot summarize the ideas in this complex and detailled book, but I urge you to read it.. It may change the way you
see yourself and the world around you.

Format:Taschenbuch
There are few books that are not only "good books" but absolutely neccessary to read. This is one of them. Julian Jaynes' theory of the evolution of the human mind is a good explanation of such different phenomenas like glossolaly, oracle, hypnosis, belief in God, belief in ghosts, obsession etc. Since in the past, hallucinations e.g. of God have been a part of man's perception of the world, and relicts of those hallucinations like superstition and religious fanatiscm that nowadays hamper mankind's progress, this book could lead mankind to a more enlightended and scientific view of the world and itself.
