If Michael Crichton and Carl Hiaasen collaborated on a book about the organ transplant and genetic engineering industries, the result might look a lot like this very bizarre novel, so long as those two wildly successful authors didn't confuse their roles. Crichton's job would be to invent a plausible extrapolation of emerging discoveries and technologies and meld it into a thrilling tale of science run amok; Hiaasen would need to create a menagerie of bizarros, cretins, medical monsters, and heartless tycoons, as well as laugh-out-loud send-ups of the madness of modern life. Fortunately, it's not necessary to wait for Crichton and Hiaasen to embark on such a collaboration. Fitzhugh has already done it, and he's thrown in a likable protagonist to fend off the craziness and keep the science on track. It's not easy walking the tightrope between medical thrillers ala Crichton and absurdist black comedy in the Hiaasen mold, but Fitzhugh manages it smoothly. Expect fans of both styles to applaud his dexterity. Thomas Gaughan

If there's anybody currently working hard at resuscitating the art of political incorrectness, it's Fitzhugh, first in Pest Control (LJ 3/1/97) and now in The Organ Grinders. Jerry Landis, the driving force behind the pharmaceutical concern Landaq, plots to use baboon organs to fill the demand for human hearts, lungs, and tissue. Aiding him is Arty, whose discovery of his own rapid-healing ability has led him (for a price) to the head of the organ donor line, leaving him at this point little more than a human stump in a motorized wheelchair. Pitted somewhat unevenly against them are Paul Symon and his wife, Georgette, the kind of people you always see at tables in supermarkets dutifully and ineffectively gathering signatures on petitions for good causes. These cartoonish players acting out their parts lead to some laugh-out-loud incidents that at times alarmingly mirror today's TV news. It all goes to prove that it's not easy for a satirist to stay on top of his game nowadays, when it's nearly impossible to separate fact from fiction. Suitable for most public libraries and apt to be fairly popular among audiences for uninhibited humor.?Bob Lunn, Kansas City P.L., MO

With the sense of humor of a can of cat food, this book is a tedious look at all the archetypes of contemporary life. Everybody's cardboard. By the time you hit page 30, you don't give a damn about anyone, you start hoping that an asteroid will somehow make an appearance and end the whole thing.I read allusions and comparisons to Hiassen and Wodehouse. I'm forced to wonder if those making such citations have actually ever read those writers... based on the evidence of this dog, I think not. Don't waste your money, don't waste your time. Timely topics, larger than life characters and an ending you can see coming a mile away. This book tries, and almost succeeds, at being good. There is a Catch 22 feeling about the characters and a quick light style to the text. Unfortunately the whole thing never quite clicks and I found myself skimming ahead to the end.

This book fearlessly and successfully takes on (and finds the most humorous angles of)some heavy, but very relevant,topics. With a rare feel for human nature(both good and bad), Fitzhugh develops bigger-than-life characters, whose lives become,improbably, entwined by the sleazy organ trading/procurement scene and the dark corners of what happens when big business searches for the bottom line of genetic engineering. This book does an unusually good job of meshing genuine factual information and thought provoking concepts, with hilarious scenes (the endearing Hells' Angel character, who repeatedly sabatoges the wrong cars in a shopping mall parking lot, all while feverishly scooping copious, dirty fingernail-fulls of his home-concoction of speed from the baggie sitting on the front seat of his decrepit truck, and the pathetic and mercenary doctor who bemoans his lot in life while groping for spilled organs in the dark slime of a warehouse floor in India, are 2 of the memorable scenes/characters that spring to mind!) Fitzhugh, and his characters, are the masters of the one-liner, the pithy analysis and the well-turned phrase that we all wish we had been clever enough to think of at the time. To borrow from the "Joker," as I read along in this book, I found myself re-reading certain sections and saying to myself, "Where does he get those wonderful lines?"Despite the levity and the cartoonish scale of some of the actors, there is an ever-present undercurrent that reminds the reader of the dark and serious side of the weighty topics around which the colorful story is draped. The characters, though unmistakably unique individuals, are clearly telling representatives of certain types of people and/or sectors of our modern communities. In writing this book, Fitzhugh has accomplished no mean feat; he has seamlessly melded humour with provocative social comment. These qualities are the hallmark of a "classic." In much the same way as other rare books and movies have seized the imagination and heart of the intelligent public, it is my feeling that this book, and its author, have enough depth and comedic value to develop a "cult" following. Caution - however - this book is not for the feint of heart or those who have extreme reverence for anything, as no topic is sacred and no holds are barred!
