Although the book does a theoretically approach to Operating Systems (referred to as "OS" in the following text), it is easy to follow the intention of the author. I'm student in mathematics and computer science and I currently attending a lecture about operating systems. This book is written in a language that is easy to understand. The reader is able to follow the concept of Operating Systems step by step. A lot of examples, taken rather from real life than computer related, illustrate the problems while developing a appropriate OS. The reader does not need a lot of prerequisites. With a basic knowledge of mathematics and a ability in understanding logical problems the reader will have no difficulties throughout the text. The concept of each chapter is effective. At the beginning a more or less detailed description of the background is provided. Then the author explains in detail the possible solutions or function of different approaches in the problems, i.e. : Memory Management, CPU-Scheduling, and much more. In the end a summary and some exercises conclude the chapter. Personally I would recommend this book to students, who want a basic understanding of how OSs do work. I have to mention the following This book lacks in giving very few programs. But on the other hand this makes it easier for readers, who do not have a deep knowledge of programming languages. I think it's a good book, which does give an overview of OSs. For reader's, who are experienced in computer science, there will be books, that will provide more detailed information, especially encoding and example programs.

This book has been used for the operating systems lecture at the university of Muenster and it provides an excellent path into understanding its concepts. It is written in an enjoyable and easy-to-read style. The different concepts, especially process synchronization, can be quickly understood. This book is highly recommendable.

At nearly 900 pages you do get value for money.

Silberschatz and Galvin have written a hefty textbook which takes both concentration and time to work through. It cannot be read without some basic knowledge of computer systems architecture and is not a 'progressive' book i.e. chapters can be read individually to gain understanding of specialised aspects of OS. Major plus points go to the authors for the detailed explanations of real operating systems in common use. For those wanting general knowledge, try another OS book, maybe Englander's?
