After reading the preview, I purchased the full book on the hopes that this would be more instructive. In fact, the bulk of the book appears to be somewhat recycled content, including a bulky chapter on how to assemble a reprap. It is nice having this content in one place so that you don't have to go hunting about for this info. On the other hand, a single page HTML summary with links to all of the included open source content might have been just as useful and not been close to $40, especially in ePub. This is at most a $10 book, and if you are considering purchasing, wait until it is discounted to that level.

The author might have been better served writing a Forrest Mims style notebook, three hole punched, that doubled as a note taking device.

This is a remarkably readable book for what is a very practical guide to taking advantage of the open source paradigm in a laboratory setting. There's a pretty robust defense of the theory behind open sourcing, but the author doesn't linger too long before getting into the nuts and bolts of creating your own custom lab equipment and saving thousands while doing so. This isn't for amateurs or hobbyists, but great intro into 3D printing and Arduinos, as well as a ton of handy references and outside resources. If you run a lab, or work in one, I'd definitely give this one a read.

This book is great for people breaking into 3D printing and the open source community. He not only talks about the theories and philosophies behind open source but gets down into how you can actually accomplish it, with numerous examples and sources to help you get started. The language is very readable, almost like the author is just having a conversation with you which keeps the book interesting instead of dry, which writing in this area can be very dry at times. I think everyone that runs a lab or even just makes things for themselves should read this.
