Spin-off of The Guy from Glamour
A Work in The Guy Series

Aaron Weiss knows how to escape. Years ago, he ran from a romantic disappointment and impulsively joined the Army. Now, he’s forced to take a medical discharge and readjusting to life at home proves a challenge.

Jesse Ross knows how to hide. He realizes he’s an oddball, and that he’s an outsider within his own family. He also knows his secret love since childhood, Aaron, only wants his good-looking, favored older brother. Yet Jesse could never completely abandon his intense feelings for Aaron. Over the years, Jesse was a faithful pen pal to him. Still, he's shocked to his core to find Aaron on his doorstep.

As long-buried secrets and past hurts take center stage, the two are overwhelmingly drawn to each other. But it’s their future that may force them to risk everything.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful, Sweet Addition to the Series 29. Mai 2014
Von JustJen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
What a sweet, enjoyable story this was! I was really looking foward to it after reading the first in the series, The Guy From Glamour, and as with that book, I was not disappointed. While the two MCs from Glamour do make an appearance here, this could easily be read on its own, though I’d wager to guess this might interest you to check their story out as well.

As with Glamour, I found this to be a little different than what I was expecting. Here, we have teenage best friends, Aaron and Gregory, and Gregory’s younger brother, Jesse. Aaron has a crush on Gregory that is unrequited, the results of which send Aaron packing for the Army. Gregory’s reactions are harsh and cold, leaving him wanting to have nothing whatsoever to do with Aaron.

Ten years later, a medical discharge leads Aaron back home to recover and make a new life. Things haven’t much changed for Aaron where Gregory is concerned, as he still harbors that crush he has carried for all of these years. Meanwhile, there is sweet Jesse, now a bit of a recluse, living by himself in the middle of nowhere. He has terrible anxiety issues that are more sadly explained as the story goes. While he has become quite the successful artist/sculptor, he has also had to deal with his own crush, on Aaron.

Now, what I really loved about this story were the interactions between Aaron and Jesse, mostly once they get past their own various issues enough to really see each other. I loved watching Jesse’s attempts to overcome his social issues while Aaron dealt with his own, and how they each helped each other through them. These guys are really sweet together, they communicate fairly well, and really come to care about each other when neither really thought it was possible.

While there are some bumps in the road and a small amount of angst involved in the same, the joy of seeing them work through them and overcome makes it all worth it. There is quite a bit of family drama/bad behavior which is the cause of most of Jesse and/or Gregory’s issues. Many times I wanted to wrap Jesse up in a big hug and never let go, while at the same time, kicking Gregory’s ass to kingdom come.

This is just a good quality, solid series about finding love and making futures together. The sex scenes are hot and emotionally charged which just adds to the overall charm of these stories. While either story didn’t blow me away or had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, they are wonderful romances with extremely likable characters. If you like your characters a little flawed or broken and love to watch them heal, find love and happiness, I definitely recommend you add this book and The Guy From Glamour to your TBR.

Overall Impression: I really liked it

5.0 von 5 Sternen I'm Almost Embarrassed To Say I Loved It! 30. Mai 2014
Von Alan Arthur Katz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I'm almost embarrassed to admit how much I loved this book. Why? Because it's an unadulterated romance, not a work of earth-shattering gay literary fiction. It's about love, commitment, each man finding that home is the other, and a really lovely happily-ever-after.

It's also very well written, so, what's not to like? I count "The Only Guy" as a great guilty pleasure, and recommend it most highly!

Like its predecessor, "The Guy From Glamour" (whose characters reappear in "The Only Guy"), Ms. Cates has drawn some wonderful, three dimensional characters. Jesse is a wild man, a man who walked away from his rich family and a promising future in the sciences, to live in a self-built log cabin, in the middle of nowhere. He is also a brilliantly talented and hot-selling sculptor, despite his parents' conviction that "art" is a waste of a life. Aaron, on the other hand, spent the last decade piloting choppers in Afghanistan and other places. Jesse and Aaron grew up together, their families staying in nearby cabins every Summer. Aaron is a few years older than Jesse and had a mad crush on Jesse's older brother.

After suffering a bout of endocarditis, Aaron is discharged from the military because his heart never quite recovered. He heads for a reunion with his first big crush, but ends up staying with Jesse, in the middle of nowhere, when his car breaks down. Of course, it's the perfect opportunity for them to fall in love. The older brother turns out to be a beautiful, but boorish closet case ("what did I ever see in him?") and it turns out that Jesse had harbored a long-time love for the older Aaron.

Now both are men, and all that's left to do is to find their way to each other. Which, of course, they do, and that's all the fun of the book.

Doesn't read like a groundbreaking plot, does it? It's not. It's just a gentle, beautiful love story with lots of color, fascinating secondary characters, and even some pretty hot sex - though, fortunately, never too much. With Ms. Cates, it's all about characters, and she nails them (even when two of her characters are dogs!). All of her men are men and fall in love with other men, not reflections of feminine fantasies. The author has a real knack for getting into the skin of gay men and writing them true.

I've just bought her third Kindle book, and anxiously await her next one, and the one after that.... she writes Gay Romance at its best!

    5.0 von 5 Sternen I enjoyed reading this 4,5 stars' story 6. Juni 2014

The direction of your life can and will be influenced by coincidences. Aaron had by chance joined the Army and found "his" place there. Unfortunately an infection had put an abrupt end to chopper-pilot career and he is sort of "in free fall". At least with regards to his future. He goes - on a whim - to visit his childhood friend (and brother of his adolescence crush) Jesse. Jesse is still young, but already a sought-after artist. He has left the city and found his peaceful spot far away from the noise, and not least away from his not-so-quite-nice family.
Then Aaron enters his world again. Jesse has had a crush on Aaron, although he knew that Aaron back then had feelings for his older brother. Jesse had never told Aaron about his feelings. During their letter-exchange years he remained just friendly. Although Jesse does not dare to hope, something has changed. Aaron does now "see" the grown-up person Jesse has become, the attractive man behind the beard.
It is a heartwarming story. At first sight Aaron and Jesse look as a mismatched couple. Outgoing, easygoing and fun loving Aaron is quite opposite to Jesse who hates crowds, prefers animals to people and creates wonderful sculptures. But love can be an incitement to make changes. And at the end they make it to work. I can actually picture them many years from now with couple of kids and still deeply in love.

    5.0 von 5 Sternen Brilliant 29. Mai 2014
Von SalemHellKat - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Aaron is in some way pining after his childhood friend and crush Gregory Ross. The perfect boy. He excelled academically and was very much a strong and competitive athlete. One day , Aaron made a move on Greg but Greg didn't react the way he expected him too. He pulled away from Aaron and refused to talk to him ever again. Aaron knew though that Greg felt that same attraction. He just didn't want to admit it. So a heart broken Aaron enlists in the Army. A rash decision but 10 years, Aaron grew to love being a Chopper Pilot. After getting incredibly sick , Aaron gets sent home. It's during that time home that his father reminds him of Jesse Ross. Gregory Ross's oddball little brother.

When Jesse was a kid he was warm, outgoing, compassionate, and friendly. He used to write to Aaron when he was in the Army for years until Aaron stopped writting back. That hurt him because ever since he could remember , Jesse was in love with Aaron. Yet he knew Aaron was still crushing in his older brother Gregory. Jesse grew tired of always being overlooked and undervalued.

10 years later , he's not the boy he once was. Jesse could always tell what a disappointment he was to his parents. He never did or could do what was wanted of him. His father wanted him to become a scientist , but Jesse wanted to create art. His parents always played favorites with his older siblings. So after years of being the shame and black sheep of the family, Jesse leaves to live out alone in the country side. Where he has very little interaction with people. Preferring to work his garden, craft, sculpt, and hike. Alone. In seclusion but for the company of his dogs, Superman an Dolly. His anxiety has made it extremely difficult to interact with people.

Everything changes when Aaron arrives at his doorstep. Aaron doesn't recognize this Jesse and Jesse doesn't know how to act around this Aaron. The two have a lot of catching up to do and if love comes in to play then that's just perfect.

They are both flawed but they make one of the most perfect couples. The fit each other. They make each other whole. It's not an easy relationship but it was enjoyable to read about how they started admitting their feelings for each other. How Jesse learned to let go and breathe. Aaron learned that it was okay to rely on others for help. It doesn't make you any less strong. It's not a weakness to ask for or need help .

I really enjoyed this book. I hope Henry's book is next. *crosses fingers*

I'd also like to say that I rather loved the character Jesse. Yes he is an oddball which makes him unique. I'd rather be unique than ordinary. Normalcy can be boring.

    3.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable 8. März 2015

I wanted to give this more, but in the end couldn't
I felt for Jesse, all his life he has never been good enough for his family. His anxiety attacks are not helped by his family instead he is told to get over it. They have never taken any interest in his art or his life as he didn't take the track they wanted from their son.
This is part of the reason the relationship between the two guys in part didn't work for me. When meeting again after years of absence Aaron is horrified and put off by Jeese's appearance. When this changed I don't know. And leading up to Jesse's families party Aaron always wanted Gregory. It was only after actually talking to Gregory at the party that Aaron realised that he was boring and not what he wanted, that he turned to Jesse.
The relationship took off fast after that and with Jesse's anxieties I thought that he would have questioned the relationship more. It always felt like he was the second choice and Jesse deserved more than that.
That being said I did like them together and how they worked as a couple, but It just always stayed in the back of my mind the start of the relationship.
