The autobiography of three time Tour de France Green Jersey winner.Professional road cyclist Robbie McEwen will do whatever it takes to win on a bike. He is proud of his reputation as a 'competitive little bugger' and 'a bit of a hard bastard in the peloton', yet he is at pains to point out that what he's channelling is not rage or aggression but a fierce determination and razor-sharp focus. Here, in his own words, Robbie reveals what has made him one of the most successful road cyclists of the last 20 years, winning over 200 professional races and three Tour de France green jerseys. From his teen years in Brisbane winning just about every possible title for his age group at BMX, to his road-cycling apprenticeship at the Australian Institute of Sport before signing his first professional contract with Rabobank, right up to the present day, living in Belgium and riding for RadioShack, this is the complete picture of the inimitable sprinter. Robbie is every bit the feisty, single-minded battler that his fans know and love, but he is also a father and husband who likes hanging out with his mates and having fun. As he puts it, 'Most of the time, I'm Dr Jekyll. Mr Hyde only makes rare appearances, but unfortunately people judge him, not me.' Here, with his characteristic candour and energy, Robbie sets the record straight.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I am a sprinter 4. Oktober 2011

This is one of the most exciting and riveting autobiographies I have ever read. Robbie's voice comes through in every sentence and he manages to bring you into the hustle and bustle world of professional cycling. I felt like I was in the peloton. One Way Road has inspired my love of cycling and fuelled my admiration for what it takes to be one of the best in the world. These guys are tough. Congratulations Robbie, this book is brilliant and you are a champion.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Entertaining and fun 30. Dezember 2011

I'm a keen cyclist (but not a sprinter), and keen reader. Reading 'One Way Road' felt like going for a five hour ride with McEwen and hearing him share his favourite stories from his years as a pro. The book was light, entertaining, and a relatively easy read.

The book is written as a basic chronology of his life, and includes his younger and formative years as a BMX champion, his unexpected discovery of cycling, time with the AIS, and his pro-career.

Why only three stars? The book failed to 'move' me. Other than a handful of motivating moments McEwen experienced in his races (and the first chapter is a superb example), it really was just Robbie talking to the reader about his life. It was, in many ways, a superficial treatment of McEwen. I didn't sense a great depth in the book (which I'm sure he has - there were inklings). Yes, achievement and winning make him tick and that was clear. But what else?

When I read a book I like to find personal application, deeper meaning, engagement, and connection - both to the writer and the content. In the case of this book those things were lacking. It was just a bit of fun. It's just a cycling book. If you read it and don't expect anything deeper you will be satisfied.

(Profanity warning - McEwen calls it as he sees it with four-letter words littering the pages throughout).
5.0 von 5 Sternen A Must-Read for Cycling Fans 18. September 2014

If you love cycling, then you must get this book. Everyone knows that professional road cyclists are tough. But this book will help you see just how tough they are.

Robbie helps us to get right inside is head as he grinds away for hour upon hour, partly staying as calm as possible to conserve energy, partly plotting for the final few hundred metres when it is completely make or break, and partly building up the fire so that he can implement his plans.

So many times I have had the pleasure of seeing Robbie out of sight coming into a bunch sprint. Then seemingly out of nowhere he would fly through a tiny gap and win the stage or the race. This book helps to give the “story” behind these victories.

Of course, now it is all about “trains” where the designated sprinter is delivered to the front of the pack in the last 200 to 400 metres. Of course, they are all incredibly talented. But Robbie, more often than not, had to do it on his own.

The book starts with his time as a scrappy eight year old on a BMX who hates losing. He writes: “I’m a competitive little bugger and I have been so ever since I can remember.” Then it covers his rise into the professional ranks covering most of his major victories with great photos.
The book also gives a lot of insight into the role of the team managers. So often they have their own personal agenda and fail to utilise the talent they have in their riders. But when they recognise the strengths of their riders, then fantastic results can be obtained.

Not only a must-read for cycling fans, but also by anyone who enjoys being inspired by people who show grit and determination to end up being a world champion.

That was a pleasure to read. well told stories written by the man himself.
No discussion of doping that is the only reason it gets 4 and not 5 stars
