Lee Child's Jack Reacher thrillers always have remarkably inventive setups, and One Shot is true to form. A sniper, Barr, kills five people with six shots and leaves a clear trail of evidence; arrested, he asks for Reacher. When Reacher was a military policeman, politics stopped him pursuing Barr--he cannot understand why Barr would ask for him and Barr has been beaten in jail until he cannot remember himself. Yet, for Reacher, the loner who looks at things differently from civilians, the story does not add up--Barr should not have got himself caught, should not even have fired from where he did.
Child is a master of the perverse solution to the set of questions no-one ever asked in quite that way before, and the macho yet sensitive Reacher is one of the more interesting series characters in thrillers. One Shot is a smart set of puzzles which strings the reader along to false conclusions and a sense of real danger. Jack Reacher has been doing his best to live off the grid, but his past as a military policeman keeps coming back to bite him. This time the biter is a former Gulf War sniper accused of killing six civilians in an unnamed Heartland city. Despite mountains of evidence, the accused claims he's innocent and says enigmatically, "Get Reacher." But why? Reacher, it turns out, has every reason to want the man convicted. Soon enough, though, Jack finds himself working for the defendant's attorney, who happens to be the DA's daughter. As he did in last year's The Enemy, Child combines detail-building procedural style with an all-systems-go thriller narrative, but this time the mix doesn't quite emulsify. In The Enemy, the procedural elements held our interest, but this time we feel like Child is keeping the reins on his story, like a jockey rating a horse that's begging to run. Child finally uses the whip--and the finale is a doozy--but it's a bit too little too late. Still, even a slightly off-stride Reacher can run away from most of the competition in the thriller sweepstakes. Bill Ott

Jack Reacher ist längst zum Markenzeichen für geradlinig erzählte Thriller geworden. Der jetzt in den "besten Jahren" befindliche Superheld, Ex-MP und Meisterschütze kommt mit dem Bus in die Stadt, besitzt bloß, was er auf dem Leibe trägt, räumt knallhart auf, verdreht mehreren Schönheiten den Kopf und verschwindet nach dem Shoot-out im Sonnenaufgang. Gleich zu Beginn löst er wieder den Fall mit einem der üblichen Geistesblitze. Dass er diesmal aber falsch liegt, erkennt der aufmerksame Leser so unschwer, dass man schon etwas Zweifel am Helden bekommen kann. Witzig, wie Reacher immer wieder in Aufruhr gerät, wenn ihn so etwas wie Selbstzweifel befallen. Wie üblich lässt Lee Child nicht zu, dass Logik und Wahrscheinlichkeit ihre hässlichen Häupter erheben. Spannend ist die glänzend geschriebene Story allemal. Bis zum nächsten Mal, Jack.

What follows is a brilliantly-plotted police procedural full of twists and turns. And a meeting with a former lover, and the need to keep the lid on a big scandal. Soon the local police starts a manhunt for JR, and he in turn tries to elude arrest while figuring out who is behind all this, and who can be trusted and who not in this town.
This novel is marvelously plotted and makes for compulsive reading. Every chapter ends with a cliff hanger. The ultimate villains and their leader are a ruthless lot indeed.
For readers unaware of JR, he hails from a military family and spent all his life in the army as a brilliant MP investigator, until he was axed in a major downsizing operation. Ever since he roams America without luggage, mobile phone, changing clothes every four days, living on his severance pay. No roots, no rest. In some of the earlier adventures he drifted into, he was paid. For this exploit, already short of money, he was not.
Wonderful escape reading for males chained to routine jobs and lots of monthly installments to live for. Woman readers find JR attractive too, because he is courteous towards them and because current and former lady friends prove loyal associates.

Wieder mal ein packender Reacher. Er beginnt diesmal aber nicht, wie sonst mit Jack Reacher, sondern mit der Beschreibung eines Anschlages in irgendeinem amerikanischen Städtchen. Alles scheint klar, der Täter schnell gefasst und hinter Schloss und Riegel gesteckt. Seine einzigen Äußerungen bevor der vermeindliche Täter von anderen Knackis halb tot geschlagen wird: "You've got the wrong guy." "Get Jack Reacher." Reacher ist schon auf dem Weg, aber nicht um zu helfen, sondern den Täter um die Ecke zu bringen. Denn das hat er ihm versprochen, falls er ein zweites Mal auf unschuldige Menschen schießt... Einzig die Schwester des Täters hält zu ihm. Schließlich mischt sich noch die Tochter des District Attorny ein. Und was wäre Reacher wenn nicht alles anders ist, als es zunächst scheint?

Und wieder ist er weg... auf zu neuen Abenteuern.
